AN Interior: Escher GuneWardena Architecture frames l.a.Eyeworks flagship in a cave of building insulation

"Eyewear brand l.a.Eyeworks shook up the optometry scene with striking, gender-defying ad campaigns in the ’80s. Greg Gorman’s black and white photography captured the likes of Andy Warhol, RuPaul, and Debbie Harry, reshaping eyewear as a beautiful accessory. For the new flagship in Los Angeles, the brand continues to put a new perspective on the conventional, tapping local office Escher GuneWardena Architecture for a cavelike spin on retail design."

Special thanks to James Cardona, project manager at EGA.

Spring updates from our newsletter:

1. An unusually long and narrow garden stretches behind the 1967 post-and-beam house the noted Japanese-American architect Thomas Takahashi built for himself in Silver Lake. EGA inserted a pool and a pool house.

2. The February issue of Architectural Digest highlighted the restoration of Williams's personal residence, a project developed by EGA in collaboration with designers Billy Cotton and Leyden Lewis.

3. EGA's 2010 House on Six Legs was recently sold. Situated near the Silver Lake Reservoir, this 2,500-square-foot house hovers above the gently sloping site, supported discretely by piers covered in vines. Brock & Lori and Brian Linder with Mark Mendez offer two opportunities to tour the home virtually, the former led by Frank & Ravi. You can find the links in our bio.

4 & 5. With Modernism Week in Palm Springs this past February and the Docomomo conference taking place in Los Angeles in Mid-March, EGA spoke about recent projects: Frank and Ravi with Dr. Barbara Lamprecht discussed the restoration of Richard Neutra's 1929 Lovell Health House and Ravi spoke about the restoration of Gregory Ain's 1952 Greene Residence in Silver Lake. While at Modernism Week, Frank discussed the ongoing restoration of Lautner's 1968 Elrod House in Palm Springs with designer and homeowner Jeremy Scott, architectural restorer Mark Haddawy, architect Alan Hess, and moderator Adele Cygelman.

6. This weekend, Frank joins David Mauer (grandson of the original owner) and Sian Winship of SAH/Southern California to explore the home's history, Wright & Lautner's designs, and the path forward to preserving this LA Historic Cultural Monument.

7. As restoration begins on the Galka Scheyer House (R. Neutra, 1934 & G. Ain, 1936), this Saturday Frank and Ravi are joining Gloria Williams Sander — curator of the Norton Simon's 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘓𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘍𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥: 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘢𝘭𝘬𝘢 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘺𝘦𝘳 — to talk about the future of this Hollywood Hills home.

Join us for the discussion “Richard Neutra’s ‘Galka Scheyer House’: Past, Present and Future,” on Saturday, May 2 with Curator Gloria Williams Sander and architects Ravi GuneWardena and Frank Escher of Escher GuneWardena Architecture (@egarchla)—who are leading the restoration of this modernist masterpiece.

In 1934, art dealer and collector Galka Scheyer took up residence in a Hollywood Hills home designed by Richard Neutra. The living room served as a gallery where Scheyer hosted salons and offered panoramic views of the city and ocean below. This unique blend of art and architecture made the journey up Blue Heights Drive a transformative experience for visitors, distinguishing Scheyer from her peers.

📅 Saturday, May 2 at 5:00 p.m.
🎟️ Free with Museum admission.
🎨 Walkup tickets are available starting at 4:00 p.m.

Look for EGA's restoration project of the Paul R. Williams house in the March issue of AD. The careful restoration included structural work, upgrades to infrastructure, conservation of original surfaces and built-in features, as well as bringing back the original color scheme of pale greens and pastel colors, and adding a new master bathroom. Interiors by Billy Cotton and Leyden Lewis. Thanks to Mayer Rus and AD for bringing more attention to Williams in this momentous year. “I Am an Architect: Paul R. Williams”, opening in late 2026 at Getty, LACMA, and USC, will feature work from his archives, now held jointly by the Getty Research Institute and USC. EGA is proud to contribute to the legacy of this important figure in 20th century American architecture.

We had the privilege of speaking with architects Frank Escher and Ravi GuneWardena of @egarchla about their design of the House on Six Legs in Silver Lake —  our listing at 2327 Ewing Street, currently listed for $2,595,000. This sculptural home was built between 2005 and 2010, stands among the Silver Lake architectural homes of Lautner, Neutra and Schindler.

Frank and Ravi shared how the contours of the land, the orientation toward the view, and the conceptual spirit behind the home’s distinctive form shaped its design — creating a piece of architecture that feels both rooted in nature and elevated beyond it.

As founders of Escher GuneWardena Architecture, they are celebrated for their work restoring Los Angeles’ most important modernist homes, including Richard Neutra’s Lovell Health House, the Eames House, and John Lautner’s Chemosphere.

Escher GuneWardena, Architects | House on Six Legs, 2010

Open House October 19th 1 - 4pm

2327 Ewing St
Los Angeles, CA 90039

Hovering above a sloping Silver Lake hillside, the House on Six Legs appears to levitate on five vine-covered piers. Its sharply angled façade aligns with both the reservoir view and height setbacks, while a dramatic cantilever shelters the carport and glass-enclosed stair below.

Inside, two parallel zones divide the plan: an open living, dining, and kitchen area balanced by four bedrooms and a spine of baths and utilities. At the rear, the floor meets the ground, extending to a tranquil patio and lap pool that connect the home to its landscape.

Completed in 2010 after five years of design and construction, this lakeside residence by Escher GuneWardena Architecture, the acclaimed duo known for restoring works by Lautner, Schindler, Paul Williams, and Charles & Ray Eames, distills mid-century Los Angeles ideals through contemporary precision.

Nearly 3,000 square feet of glass and dark wood create an interplay of light and structure. The kitchen, fitted with Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Bosch, flows seamlessly into the main living spaces, while the primary suite opens to sunsets framed by a movable wall.

Outdoors, native plantings, citrus trees, and terraces form layered gathering spaces. A firepit, built-in barbecue, and elevated deck extend the home’s geometry into the landscape, blurring house and horizon.

Tucked at the end of a Silver Lake cul-de-sac near LaMill Coffee and Botanica, the House on Six Legs stands among Los Angeles’ most distinctive modernist works, a study in lightness, restraint, and craft.

A special thank you to Brock & Lori. We appreciate you!
