Voici un petit livre que se dévore en quelques minutes. Il s’agit d’une brève mais passionnante Conversation (c’est aussi le titre du livre, publié par Lenka Lente, lenkalente.com) entre le grand compositeur Edgard Varèse, l’une des idoles de Frank Zappa, et Gunther Schuller, connu pour son travail avec Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman ou encore John Lewis, et instigateur du “third stream”.
Élève de la fameuse Schola Cantorum (dont il garde un mauvais souvenir : Vincent d’Indy prend cher !), contemporain de Claude Debussy, qu’il admirait beaucoup (« pour son économie de moyens et sa clarté, l’intensité qu’il atteint à travers elles, équilibrant d’une façon quais mathématique timbres, rythmes et textures »), Edgard Varèse, épris plus que tout autre de liberté d’expression, ne mâche pas ses mots et dit notamment son peu de goût pour l’improvisation (« Pour moi, ces façons de faire sont trop imprévisibles ! »).
Par quel disque commencer à écouter Varèse ? “The Complete Works” par Riccardo Chailly (avec le Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra et l’Asko Ensemble) est idéal.
