Living with Multiple Sclerosis, landscape architect, film producer and mother @alizasovani experiences daily shifts in her body.
After slowing down to study the cycles that sustain the planet, she began to recognise the same rhythms within herself. On her journey, she reconnected with her roots and the Islamic principle of Tawhid, meaning oneness - how the needs of the planet mirror our own.
This film is part of Planet Health Stories, a series in collaboration with @bupa exploring the inseparable bond between human and planetary health.

Two sisters. One Indigenous-owned eco resort. Zero chill. 🍁 @AliyaJasmine and @AlizaSovani traveled to the rainforest in BC for wildlife and luxury—with a side of family chaos—and came back with a shared byline. Yes, somehow between forest bathing and sipping local wine on the dock, the @EarthTonesLab co-founders managed to file a story from @KlahooseWildernessResortwhich is NOW LIVE at @CanGeo magazine (🔗 link in bio).

A reflection on @earthtoneslab co-founder @alizasovani in the classroom …
One of the most rewarding parts of co-teaching a Master of Architecture studio with @studio_moffitt @carleton_architecture this term was hearing, during final reviews, that several seasoned professors had rarely seen architecture students spend half or more of their final presentations focused on landscape-led strategy.
Not the site plan at the end.
Not landscape as ornament.
But landscape systems as the starting point: ecology, water, microclimate, habitat, vernacular material systems, and long-term brownfield adaptation shaping the architecture itself.
In a time of climate crisis and unprecedented biodiversity loss, this shift matters deeply. 🌱

A screening at the HQ of @rcgs_sgrc discussing Bird Names and conservation with @cangeo ‘s Editor-in-Chief @xela.explores and the film’s star @tykeejames along with Director @aliyajasmine and producer @alizasovani from @earthtoneslab
The night gathered an audience full of birders, journalists, and explorers to debate whether the future of conservation might depend on making the natural world feel like it belongs to everyone. A very elegant evening for a collective taxonomy identity crisis 😉
Thank you to everyone who attended the Ottawa Premiere. What an evening!

Last week, we welcomed guests to the Alex Trebek Theatre for a screening of Bird Names, a 22-minute documentary from @earthtoneslab that examines the movement to rename North American bird species named after people.
The film follows a Canadian-led group of birders through the history behind nearly 150 North American bird names, many of which are tied to colonial figures, racism and exclusion in natural history. Through culture, ecology and conservation, Bird Names asks what these names carry forward, and what could change if birds were named in ways that better reflect the species themselves.
Directed by RCGS Fellow @aliyajasmine and produced by RCGS Fellow @alizasovani, the film brings this debate into focus at a time when bird populations are declining and conversations around equity in outdoor spaces remain urgent.
Following the screening, Aliya Jasmine, Aliza Sovani and @tykeejames joined Canadian Geographic Editor-in-Chief Alexandra Pope for a Q&A on the making of the film, the politics of naming and the future of bird conservation. The Q&A was followed by a reception, where guests had the chance to connect and continue the conversation.
Thank you to everyone who joined us at 50 Sussex for an evening of film and discussion!

Harvard University GSD just featured Bird Names in its newsletter, seems like the Ivy League is making time to look up from the archives and notice what’s flying overhead. 🦅
One of their own helped produce it, so yes - it could be on the finals. You don’t NEED to watch it to graduate, but you probably should 😉 👩🏽🎓
