Manchester-based designer Danielle Molyneux (working as Dotto) has launched Pop Talk, a new collection of hand screen-printed pieces that lift everyday phrases out of casual conversation and give them physical, typographic form.

Each print starts with a moment of language that might otherwise fade away... a throwaway phrase from friends, family or group chats and turns it into a visual statement that’s funny, awkward, sincere, and surprising all at once.

By isolating these words and re-printing them by hand, the series shows how words that seem light and simple can carry real meaning when given shape and pause.

The Northern Design Festival is back again next month. I loved making a poster for them with the specially made collab font ‘Lancer’ by F37. The theme was heritage so I drew inspiration from my St Helens roots. For those of you not well versed in northern industrial towns, St Helens was famous for its glass industry. Signs around the town hailed it as ‘World Class in Glass.’ My piece, Hot Furnace celebrates that.

I used the opportunity to get back to the print room. I’m still choosing whether to show the digital or the screen version at the NDF exhibition. The digital is super-slick and perfectly printed (of course). The screen version used up some old ink, so is a different colour from the original design, and has some visible imperfections.
