Great session with Anna Badkhen

Such a fortune to be spending a day in the studio @firehouse12studio with the great @dezthought ahead of the concert tomorrow. Give thanks. Love accordingly.

In the first year of Israel’s latest genocide in Gaza, I listened to @dezthought 's record, Atalaya, on repeat. If you’ve been to Dezron’s concerts, you know that they always begin with the sonic blessing you hear in the beginning of this song. Or perhaps it is a call to attention. I want the first piece in my new essay collection, TO SEE BEYOND, to serve as such a blessing or attunement, to set the tone for what we have at hand and an intention for what we are hoping to reach.
For thirty years I have been recording the violence we commit against one another, and still I am at a loss about human nature, about men deporting families and marching children to an abattoir, about a country caging children who don’t speak its language, about an army firebombing refugees in their sleep, about men walking into a village and shooting its elders dead. You might say our capacity for magical thinking is the antidote to our capacity for atrocity. But I want to believe that radical hope is more than a balancing act—that it is, in fact, a call to attention, an attunement, a setting of intention and direction.
This Friday, May 8, Dezron & I invite you to join us in setting intention for hope. 8:30 & 10 pm at @firehouse12studio
See you there!

Had a blast bangin on a Can with David Murray and Nasheet Waits. Festival continues today.
Bless up your Sunday!

Thank you JazzMobile for making this all happen. So great to see friends and get such a good feeling today. Forza Miles and Trane! Forza African American Classcal Music.

Throwing the spotlight on my student Audrey today. She’s finishing up her Freshman year and she’s been playing a pile of Bass all year, working hard and making a ridiculous amount of progress. I’m super proud of her. Just look at her hands!!!! Makes me wanna 😭 Lol.
Sound, vibe and Intent. Look out world. All of my bass students are working on this classic by Duke Ellington and Jimmy Blanton for their final. This ain’t the finished product , but she working on it and they all are and in a couple weeks they all better sound good! 👊🏿
For now get into it. This semester at NYU has been a blast. So many promising students/humans are ready to get involved in ART!
