Robin Coste Lewis’s debut poetry collection, Voyage of the Sable Venus (Knopf) won the National Book Award in poetry––the first time a poetry debut by an African-American had ever won the prize in the National Book Foundation's history, and the first time any debut had won the award since 1974. Lewis’s writing has appeared in various journals and anthologies, such as Time Magazine, The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Paris Review, Transition, and Best American Poetry. Lewis’s latest collection is Archive of Desire.

Alexandra Grant is a celebrated Los Angeles and Berlin based visual artist whose work explores text, language, literature, and philosophy. She has exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide and collaborated with artists across disciplines.

@octavias_bookshelf, Pasadena’s beloved independent bookstore highlighting BIPOC writers, will be hosting a book signing immediately following the conversation. Copies of Robin Coste Lewis’s books will be available for purchase.

Yesterday, The Culture List team showed up in East LA to produce a Getty giveaway and mask-making workshop at Plaza de La Raza’s Dia de Los Muertos celebration! Masks were inspired by the collection of Jose Guadalupe Posada’s illustrations in Getty’s Research Library and giveaways included free parking passes and special edition tote bags. The community celebration included many gorgeous alters, installations, and exhibition, delicious food, amazing dance and musical performances, and art everywhere you looked!

I’m proud to have co-designed & lead this workshop in the neighborhood I grew up in going to church, eating Jamaican food & connecting with the heritage of my Black community.

🎨We had a ball!
Here’s a snapshot of all ages who stopped by to express themselves with affirmations and collage. We used 16 images from the @gettymuseum ‘s permanent collection to create. Including new photography acquisitions from the Johnson Company archives. I also added in a few prints of #DAngelo and #AngieStone to honor the ancestors & music culture that we hold dear.

Another amazing community engagement project completed by The Culture List team! Getty’s booth at the 20th Taste of Soul Family Festival in Crenshaw featured an interactive Collage & Affirmations Workshop by artist Shelley Bruce, free giveaways, and introductions to/information on Getty exhibitions and programs. It was a jam packed day of art, music, and lots of dancing!! The neighborhood showed up in droves. Thank you @tasteofsoullafest @gettymuseum@artistshelleybruce and the @culture_list team for a joyful day of love in the historic center of Los Angeles’ black culture and community!

We are so proud of our collab with @gettymuseum and @ciclavia Heart of LA yesterday, October 12th!

The Culture List crew and lead photographer Yemi Seyi @yemididit produced an incredible free bicycle portraits studio for the community, inspired by historic photographs in the Getty museum’s permanent collection.
