Lou Mumford’s paintings explore the shifting, tangled nature of being human, the fragments,memories, and emotions that build, erode, and resurface over time. Working primarily in oil, she creates textured, gestural surfaces where figures and motifs emerge and dissolve through layered abstraction. Using a mix of impasto and soft transitions, her work holds a tension between clarity and ambiguity, echoing how memory, emotion, and identity often feel: flickering, uncertain, and alive.

Her process is intuitive and physical, a continual act of layering, scraping back, and reworking. This rhythm of discovery and deletion mirrors how we process experience, with traces that remain even when buried, subtly shaping what follows. Rooted in personal experience, her work reflects on motherhood, memory, and the quiet endurance of being human. Her paintings invite viewers into a space that feels both intimate and uncertain, where forms shift, linger, and fade like thoughts and feelings caught between remembering and forgetting
