🚨UPCOMING SHOW🚨
DAEMON SAUCE
Liam Mertens & Stefano Giordano
05 June - 7 June
Private view: 05 June, 6-8pm
Barbican Arts Group Trust
114a Blackhorse Lane E17 6AA, London
Liam Mertens & Stefano Giordano are delighted to announce ‘Damon Sauce’, a duo show. With ‘Sauce’ also being a homophone of ‘Source’ both Giordano and Mertens draw from disparate ‘Sources’ in a physical and metaphysical sense to create works that stretch the peripheries of what painting can be. Their process results in wall based works with layers of materiality and meaning at once humorous, dark, contemplative, and both quiet and loud.
Announcement coming Monday 11th May 11am.

📣 HYPHA PRESENTS -
“Call Incoming…”
Curated by @haydndoesart
🎟️ PV: Thursday, 28th May, 6 – 9 PM
🔗 RSVP via Hypha Studios’ Eventbrite
📍 Hypha HQ, Unit 3, Euston Tower, 286 Euston Road, NW1 3AS
Call Incoming… takes its cue from the playground game “Telephone”, where a whispered message morphs each time it’s passed along. Made up entirely of new, bespoke works, the inception of this show began with a piece by curator Haydn Albrow, whose work was shared confidentially to the next artist to reinterpret in their own style and medium before they passed their piece onto another. The chain continues artist by artist, culminating in an exhibition that reveals how a single artwork can evolve, distort, and transform through multiple creative voices.
As each piece morphs through medium, material, and theme, the show celebrates the diversity of the featured artists’ interpretive lenses. While the Telephone Game is often a byword for inaccuracy or a cumulative error caused by the spread of information, “Call Incoming…” stands as a celebration of evolution of a message through interpretation and translation.
In a world of polarised discourse and remote communication where tone and nuance are so often lost in restrictive formats, “Call Incoming…” also questions our tendency to assume we have all the information we need to make a judgement – will the artwork at the end of the chain bear any resemblance to the initial piece?

Originally from New Zealand, Mertens grew up in Auckland before completing a BA in Visual Arts at Auckland University of Technology after which he moved to London to pursue painting. He has exhibited in group and solo shows across the UK and Netherlands and completed an MA in Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL. Graduating in 2019 with a body of work defined by vivid tonal palettes which merged personal histories with New Zealand’s art historical cannon.
Having recently moved away from a solely painting practice, he has been finding joy and excitement in the studio creating assemblages which show a real curiosity of materiality and form. Since graduating, he has been involved in numerous group exhibitions and projects, including Bloomberg New Contemporaries (2020), Unit 1 Radical Residency VI , and the Jealous Prize (2019), and was a finalist for the Ingram Prize in 2021.

Autumn / Winter at Canal Boat Contemporary.
We’re looking back at last season. What a privilege to host this run of artists! And what a lot of fun we had at our weekly gatherings. Thanks to everyone who came.
A/W25 had a focus on figuration, in particular work made where imagination and observation meet. New mythologies, psychological landscapes, narrative instinct, mess, humour, darkness, tenderness.
We’ve had lots of shows by painters exploring paint in its purest non representational form - but CBC is shaping up as a home for a particular strain of contemporary figuration: intuitive, narrative, myth-leaning, emotionally charged.
One of the real highlights of last year, which including all forms of painting, was Miniature Masters - a joyful, chaotic, generous open call that brought hundreds of tiny works into the cabinet. It drew in new audiences, sparked conversations on the towpath, and reminded us just how inventive painters can be when scale becomes an inspiration rather than a limit.
AUTUMN / WINTER PROGRAMME
• Alix Philippe — Hour of the Wolf - 24–30 Sep | Little Venice @alixphilippeartist
• Eryn Lougheed — June Sound - 1–7 Oct | Little Venice @erynlougheed
• Ian Healy — The Outliers - 8–14 oct | Little Venice @ianhealypainter
• Miniature Masters -15–28 Oct | Regent’s Park Canal
• Rachel Coyne — War on Women -29 Oct–4 Nov | London Fields @rachel_painting
• Rachel Mercer — Beer and Cigarettes - 5–11 Nov | London Fields Canal @rachelmercerartist
• Laurie Cole — About the Wreck - 12–18 Nov | London Fields Canal @laurie_cole_
• Liam Mertens — Pull Gently - 19–25 Nov | London Fields Canal @lsmertens
• Jennifer Pochinski — Five Nudes - 26 Nov–2 Dec | London Fields Canal @jp_ochinski
• Daniel MacCarthy — Will O’ the Wisp - 3–9 Dec | Victoria Park Canal @daniel_maccarthy
• Orlando Seale — A little every day, and love -10–16 Dec | Victoria Park Canal @orlandoseale
• Pushka — Dance on the Water - 23 Dec | Victoria Park @pushka_artist
Thank you to every artist, and to everyone who stopped, looked, talked, lingered - as we plot a course for 2026. We have exciting news to come!
Yours, as ever, Captain of the ship, Pushka
