Step into the world of @gracielaiturbide Graciela Iturbide (b. 1942, Mex) with "Eyes to Fly With" at C/O Berlin, the first major retrospective of the Mexican photographer in Berlin. Spanning over five decades, the exhibition brings together iconic series and rarely seen works, tracing a practice that has shaped how Mexico and other cultural landscapes are visually understood.
Iturbide’s photographs explore intimate relationships between identity, ritual, and society. Combining documentary precision with a poetic sensibility, she turns her attention to communities and everyday worlds where questions of belonging, cultural diversity, and female autonomy take center stage—from Juchitán and the nomadic Seri community in northern Mexico to her long-term project White Fence in East Los Angeles. Her images of Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul, as well as works from India and Bangladesh, reveal recurring themes of spirituality, transience, and the tension between tradition and modernity.

"Photographs are like whales that are capable of carrying entire islands," writes @doerteeissfeldt Dörte Eißfeldt (b. 1950, GER), whose work has explored the world and the medium of photography itself with a gaze that is tender, poetic, and endlessly curious.
With "Archipelago", C/O Berlin presents a long-awaited major institutional exhibition by one of Germany’s most important experimental photographers. Spanning nearly five decades, the show brings together large-format series, key works from her archive, unpublished sketches, artist books, and notebooks. Nothing in Eißfeldt’s images is as it seems: she works with fragments of reality, experiments with analog and digital processes. Surfaces shift, objects transform, and each photograph carries its own life, revealing new relationships between past and present.

What can a face reveal about the future?
In "(Inter)faces of Predictions", Finland-based artist and researcher @sheungyiuphoto Sheung Yiu (b. 1991, HKG) explores the hidden histories and emerging technologies that shape how we see and interpret human faces. C/O Berlin presents the first institutional solo exhibition in Germany by Yiu, winner of the C/O Berlin Talent Award 2025.
Through photographs, found footage, object-based installations, and a video essay, Yiu investigates how faces have been used across cultures and technologies to predict character and destiny—from traditional East Asian face reading and Western physiognomy to contemporary facial recognition. His work reveals the growing influence of algorithms on our identities while inviting viewers to question what we consider an "objective" gaze, whether spiritual, scientific, or computational. The exhibition is accompanied by insights from arts writer, editor, and researcher @himeganwilliams Megan Williams (b. 1995, UK), this year’s C/O Berlin Talent Award winner in the category Theorist.

How do we read a face?
In this Desktop Lecture Performance, artist Sheung Yiu @sheungyiuphoto traces the links between ancient face-reading traditions and contemporary facial recognition technologies. Moving between spiritual belief systems and algorithmic logic, the work opens up questions around how identity and prediction are constructed. Drawing on historical references and current debates around AI, the performance reveals how systems of meaning are shaped rather than simply discovered.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of VALIE EXPORT.
A pioneering artist and one of the most influential voices in feminist and media art, her work challenged conventions and reshaped the way we think about the body, image, and representation. @valieexportfoundation
In 2024, we had the honor of presenting her work at C/O Berlin. We remember her as a radical thinker and artist whose legacy will continue to resonate.
Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and all those she inspired.

"I wanted to capture the moment of moving from one medium to another, from air into water," says @doerteeissfeldt.
Taken in a swimming pool, the image captures a precisely timed jump, where body and light meet at the water’s surface. A familiar setting becomes the stage for a subtle shift in perception.
