Senon Williams explains his unique framing process and the meaning behind using reclaimed materials in his work.

“When I see an old craftsman or California bungalow being demolished, I’ll stop and pick up pieces of old redwood… I feel like wood kind of holds memories of its time.”

Using salvaged wood gathered from across Los Angeles, Williams hand-builds frames from materials sourced from demolished homes and aging architecture throughout the city. The century-old redwood, marked by time, texture, and wear, becomes an extension of the work itself, carrying traces of place, memory, and lived experience.

Sara Ajami reflects on memory, perception, and the emotional residue carried within everyday objects.

“I’m really interested in how we imprint on certain objects and how those objects imprint back on us… when you render them differently than what they look like, new emotions come through.”

Working from stills captured from video, Ajami selects fleeting frames and transforms them through painting into saturated, atmospheric compositions that shift the familiar into something psychologically charged. Influenced by film noir and Lynchian aesthetics, mundane objects become vessels for nostalgia, absence, intimacy, and suspended emotion.

Sketches: Life in Landscape, the second solo exhibition by Los Angeles–based artist Donnie Molls at CMAY Gallery.

The exhibition introduces a new body of mixed-media works on paper that the artist refers to as intimate, immediate studies of the California landscape drawn from his ongoing travels.

Working from archived photographic images captured across the varied terrains of California, Molls employs a range of transfer processes to translate these moments onto paper. More spontaneous and direct than his larger works, these sketches function as both independent artworks and a parallel record of the artist’s process.

“The line was a mistake, you know. Mistakes happen, and you leave them in. Then things become part of the piece; then it becomes the main part of the piece, like this simple mistake. When you leave things in, you try not to take them out as much.

So I’m trying to refrain from overdoing, over-painting, over-erasing, and leaving all the defects and flaws in, and then creating more defects and moments.” - Donnie Molls

Donnie Molls reflects on process, layering, and working from image to surface.

“The study is more about the process… this process I’m doing compared to my old process where I lay it down and then I go ahead and paint around it. I take out things. This is more painting beforehand and then laying on top of it.”

Molls’ Sketches: Life in Landscape introduces a new body of mixed-media works on paper drawn from photographic images captured across California’s varied terrains. Using transfer processes, he translates these moments onto paper, embracing fragmentation, texture, and immediacy.

Sketches: Life in Landscape on view through May 30.
