I like nothing more than a book which is the result of a quest.
This is exactly what Nicholas Muellner latest book is about: a search about photography, life, love.
I really enjoyed reading it.
Published in the great small SPBH collection of essay.

So excited to have an essay published in the latest issue of Fotogeschichte about fairground photography. Congrats to @kathrin.schoenegg for such an inspiring volume.
My essay is about photo shooting, an attraction that appears in fairground in France in 1924 : when you hit the bull’s-eye a photo of you was taken. Your portrait as a shooter was the reward. In my text, I reveal the name of the inventor of this device.

Come at the Foundation Henri Cartier-Bresson to discover the story behind the famous photograph published in 1955 in Les Européens.
In 1952, on Rue Mouffetard in Paris, Cartier-Bresson spotted a young boy, around ten years old, coming home from shopping, arms full, with two large bottles of red wine. He was in the middle of a conversation with three young friends. Stepping away from the group, he noticed the photographer and puffed out his chest, no doubt proud to be the focus of such attention. This photograph is the very last image in The Europeans. It became one of Cartier-Bresson’s most famous images, especially in the United States, where numerous posters, postcards and signed prints were sold. Finding the model, Michel Gabriel, a few years later, the photographer wrote to him: « your style says everything about Paris. » Towards the end of his life, fearing the image would become, in his own words, « a trite cliché, » Cartier-Bresson decided to make it less widely available.

Giphantie is an astonishing little book published in 1760. Written almost eight decades before the official invention of photography, it nevertheless describes all its principles.
For the new exhibition of HCB Foundation, Romain Bernini offers a pictorial journey through this utopian tale.

Paris vernacular guaranteed!
Is there something more parisian than the Eiffel Tower or the café-croissant?
I don’t even know if there is an english word for this. We call it « barrage » [dam], or « chiffon » [rag]. It still exists, it hasn’t been replaced by a manufactured tool. Because it helps to clean the city…, it creates an unsuspected form…, it shines…, this puzzling object caught the eyes of so many artists :
1-Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Rinnstein,1925
2, 3-Eugène Atget, Boulangerie, 48 rue Descartes, 1911
4, 5-Alain Fleischer, Paysages de sol, c. 1970, postcard set
6-Tana Hoban, Chiffons de barrage, 1983
7-Denise Colomb, Vestige, 1989
8, 9-Steve McQueen, Barrage, Walther König, 2000, photographs taken in 1998
10, 11-Hervé Messina, Évacués-Barrage, selfpublished, 1999
12-Georges Didi-Huberman, Ninfa Moderna, essai sur le drapé tombé, Gallimard, 2002
