Walking* Scores for Hackney will present a new series of instructions, invitations and suggestions for art walks in the borough, to be activated during Hackney Art Week.

Drawing on colliding contexts of walking art and the use of scores in conceptual art, Walking Scores for Hackney invites people to move in new ways, blurring art and the everyday.

Encounter your place with a new focus: look, listen, notice.
Slow down and play: connect with the urban environment.
Find somewhere new: get off the beaten track and follow your curiosity.

*We use walking as an umbrella term that actively includes people who wheel, roll, or use other mobility aids to get around.

Led by Clare Qualmann, an artist/researcher whose work explores participatory, site-specific and experimental practices, often through walking. Her work sits at the intersection of art and activism, with a focus on the radical potential of participation. A founding member of the Walking Artists Network, she continues to develop its international reach. With Claire Hind, she co-edited two volumes of wander scores (Triarchy Press).

Recent projects include East End Jam, exploring foraging and food-making in the city. Upcoming work includes Walking Scores for Mile End Park, commissioned by Whitechapel Gallery and London Parks and Gardens.

A limited print edition of Walking* Scores will be available from Wilton Way Gallery and will be available digitally via Hackney Art Week.

2016... year of #WalkingWomen @somersethouse (part of the Utopia2016 year of imagination and possibility) and @forestfringeuk an extraordinary series of gatherings curated by me and @amysharrocks with walks, talks, film screenings...
1. Introducing the programme at Somerset House
2. Warming up for a @wikipedia edit-a-thon in collaboration with @thisisliveart
3. @adalodge leading her 'intimate tour of breasts' walk
4. @thisisliveart study room collection on women walking at Somerset house
5. @deeheddon's #WalkingLibrary for Women Walking reception desk, with poster for the Walking Reading Group on Participation.

Walking Women was born of our fury around assumptions of walking art being male dominated - to quote @deeheddon and @sometimes_walking 'the invisibility of women in what appears as a canon of walking is conspicuous; where they are included it is often as an 'exception' to an unstated norm, represented by a single chapter in a book or even a footnote'.
These events sought to bring together, make visible and celebrate the diversity of walking art practices made by women, including works by:
