Civa highlights the interplay between contemporary technologies, realities, and experiences across digital, physical, and hybrid spaces. More than a century of research in quantum physics has shown that the universe is neither deterministic nor entirely comprehensible or rational. At the microscopic level, matter behaves according to principles that defy classical logic: particles can exist in multiple states simultaneously, their properties emerge through interaction, and through entanglement, they can remain connected even across light years. The exhibition Civa. |indeterminate⟩⟨apparatus| is on display until 1st February 2026.

Civa beleuchtet das Zusammenspiel aktueller Technologien, Realitäten und Erfahrungen in digitalen, physischen und hybriden Räumen. Über einhundert Jahre Forschung in der Quantenphysik zeigen, dass sich das Universum klarer Vorhersagbarkeit und vollständiger Erfassbarkeit entzieht. Auf mikroskopischer Ebene unterliegt Materie Prinzipien, die der klassischen physikalischen Logik trotzen: Teilchen können in mehreren Zuständen gleichzeitig existieren, ihre Eigenschaften entstehen durch Wechselwirkung, und durch Verschränkung bleiben sie teils über Lichtjahre hinweg miteinander verbunden. Quantum physics invites us into a world where states overlap, interactions change everything and connections stretch across impossible distances.
In |indeterminate⟩⟨apparatus| these ideas shift into contemporary art, where uncertainty is not a problem but a place to think differently.
The works explore what becomes possible when familiar boundaries soften when digital and physical spaces merge, when organisms meet technology and when identity is no longer fixed. Instead of clear definitions, the exhibition offers shifting viewpoints on intelligence, perception and what reality can be.

Die Quantenphysik führt uns in eine Welt, in der Zustände ineinander übergehen, Wechselwirkungen alles verändern und Verbindungen über riesige Distanzen bestehen bleiben.
In |indeterminate⟩⟨apparatus| finden diese Ideen ihren Weg in die Gegenwartskunst, in einen Raum, in dem Unbestimmtheit zum Ausgangspunkt neuer Perspektiven wird.
Die Arbeiten zeigen, was passiert, wenn gewohnte Grenzen weicher werden wenn digitale und physische Räume sich überlagern, wenn Organismen auf Technologie treffen und Identität nicht mehr eindeutig ist. Statt festgelegter Antworten entstehen wechselnde Blickwinkel auf Intelligenz, Wahrnehmung und auf das, was Wirklichkeit sein kann.

Is there a difference between speculative prototyping and AI forecasting? What temporalities and modes of relation open up when we engage these technologies as collaborators rather than instruments? This session invites us to reflect on how we can engage with the tools and narratives we work with, and how we might still use them to generate counter-speculations.

‚Everything is Computer – The Planned Obsolescence of the Future’ is an artistic-research project in the form of a playable video game that interrogates how dominant narratives, AI models, and game engines encode the future we are conditioned to imagine. Third Impact is a short film created in collaboration with AI systems, that explores counter-futures of coexistence between humans and non-humans.

The artists will be presenting their works and share insights into their general practice, followed by a roundtable conversation. Nada Zanhour will be joining online for the practice sharing part.

This event is a collaboration between Civa x transmediale festival Berlin, hosted by AIL and the Weibel Institute for Digital Cultures, curated and facilitated by Eva Fischer and Anna-Lena Panter.

Laura Cugusi’s work has been nomadic across languages, disciplines and media. Her research focuses on mapping media ecologies, tech literacies, governance infrastructures and institutional world-building strategies that shape and consolidate the imagination (or lack thereof) about the future. @_lauracugusi_

Nada Zanhour (machine yearning) works across sound, video, 3D and interactive media. Her research focuses on online aesthetics, internet hyper-niches, meme culture and digital militarism. @machine_yearning_

S()fia Braga is a New Media artist and pioneer in AI-driven cinematic storytelling based in Vienna. Her artistic practice explores emerging technologies to create speculative fabulations about counter-futures, engaging with themes such as human–machine collaboration, non-human agency, and transhumanism. @wassilychair

The exhibition title |indeterminate⟩⟨apparatus| draws on the bra-ket notation, a formalism used in quantum mechanics to describe states and their transformations. “Indeterminate” refers to an unmeasured quantum system, a state of potentiality where nothing has been established yet. “Apparatus” refers not only to the measuring instrument but also to the complex constellation of the observer, the observed, and the conditions of their encounter.

Der Ausstellungstitel |indeterminate⟩⟨apparatus| greift die Bra-Ket-Notation der Quantenmechanik auf, mit der Zustände und deren Transformationen beschrieben werden. „Indeterminate“ verweist auf das ungemessene Quantensystem, einen Zustand der Potenzialität, in dem noch nichts festgelegt ist. „Apparatus“ bezeichnet nicht nur das Messinstrument, sondern steht für das komplexe Gefüge aus Beobachtendem, Beobachtetem und den Bedingungen ihrer Begegnung.

Classical physics introduces us to a world of clearly defined states of affairs: a particle is here or there; a body is in motion or at rest. By contrast, quantum physics demonstrates that different realities exist at the same time. The indeterminate here becomes a space of possibilities. What might social life look like if it functioned like a quantum system? In which situations do you believe that it is either–or? And when do you find that you can be open to all the possibilities in between?
