A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to visit the unique My Analog Journal studio and had the incredible opportunity to record an episode dedicated to Raï music!

Being Algerian and Tunisian, Raï has always been a part of my life. It has accompanied all of my family gatherings and parties with friends throughout my childhood, teenage and young adult years. It is my utmost priority to share this slice of my cultural heritage with the rest of the world, and in curating this episode, I have endeavoured to showcase this rich genre in its most authentic form. From the iconic trumpet of Messaoud Bellemou to the inimitable voice of Cheb Khaled, every track has been chosen to represent the essence of Raï and foster greater appreciation and understanding of this beautiful and unique genre.

I must give credit where credit is due: first and foremost to the amazing artists who created this beautiful music, to the reissue labels that are working tirelessly to revive and shade the light on this genre that has been long overlooked and of course to @myanalogjournal for providing a platform for music identities from around the globe to be heard.

I wanted to share a few snippets from the episode with you all, to encourage you to take a listen and show your support for Raï music, the artists and people who are reviving it.

Nordine Staifi - Goultili Bye Bye @m_k7_club @sofarecords @bongojoerecords
Cheb Kader - Reggae Rai @cheb_kader @elmir.records @chebgero
Drissi El Abbassi - Trig Maaskar @nashazphone
Kamal El Oujdi - Arouahi Lia
@chebkhaledofficial - Ne m’en voulez pas (For Given Mix)

Let's give this genre the recognition it deserves! 🙌

This is the texture of Tunis.

No singular voice behind the capital’s creative pulse, instead a convergence of artists, photographers, dancers, designers, and performers moving in parallel. Context is what connects them. It’s a city expressed through the individuals who shape it, each in their own way.

TUNIS HOTEL STEREO COMPILATION is here!!!!

Aslema friends, we’re beyond excited to finally announce this release after years of research, hunting down these records, meeting their protagonists, rebuilding their stories, and learning / laughing from their anecdotes.

This comp gathers nine of those records from musicians who understood that modernity and heritage are not opposites, that we can actually draw inspiration from other genres and cultures and still be deeply, irrefutably Tunisian, from reggae, rock and disco.

This is the third release on Shakshouka Records, and the first compilation of Tunisian music ever curated by Tunisians, in Tunisia. It’s compiled by @chebmimo_ and comes with thorough liner notes by Mehdi Ben Yahya @mehdi.byahia @radiotuniszaman and Cheb Mimo, design by the one and only @mogli_gligli & @ghimeji , mastering and cut by Frank at @thecarverystudio .

Special thanks to the artists who were super supportive and collaborative throughout the process: Jomaa Bouzrara, Sadok Gharbi, Hechmi Meliani, Hamadi Mahjoubi, Yassine Zalila son of Ridha Zalila, Mehdi Mellef son of Khaled Mellef, Nejib Toukabri, just to name a few!

We’ll be sharing more info on this release in the upcoming days.

Chokran barcha barcha ou tahya touness!

🐪Romdhankom Mabrouk🐪

Today’s shakshouka on @nts_radio is inspired by a recent escapade to the Sahara to play at @_nomadman__
Unfortunately I couldn’t make it to the festival because I was caught in a desert storm and stuck in the Sahara for 7 hours with Mostfa & @booksthatmove__ who may say it was a “near death experience” :p

tune in at 1pm GMT!
