Here's my most beloved tape — the one that led me to work on this project around Yassine Nana.
I discovered Yassine Nana around 2018 on YouTube. The first song I heard was actually by his brother Mouftah, but it was released on this tape under the name Yassine. It was a complete blast when I heard it for the first time: an 808 drum machine and DX7 synth pads coupled with a heavy bass line, a reggae-dub atmosphere, and Mouftah's low, soulful voice. I had never heard anything like that in North African productions from the 1980s.
I was able to hear the rest of the tape as it was on YouTube. Many other tracks were exceptional — Boustan el Achaar, Ma Ahla Lilat Samar, Dane Wa Dane, on which the great Chrif Lamrani (Lemchaheb) plays his mandole.
It was recorded at his cousin Rachid Lamrani's place, in his first studio in Paris. Hassan and Miloud Boussif brought the Nana family there, as the family was in the French capital for a few weeks. It was a great opportunity to record something from the family, as the last recordings dates back from 1972. Aside from the father, the whole family came to the studio. Ali, the elder brother, was in charge of the arrangements along with Rachid's friend Alexandre “Patino” Gbezo, a Senegalese bassist based in Paris. Yassine and Mouftah were the main singers, while the sisters sang backing vocals on a few tracks. A pure 1980s parisian multicultural production.
It was recorded during the fall of 1984 and released in early 1985. I don't know if this tape sold well — probably not: it was outside of what was being done back then, and really far from raï music, which was already dominating the market at the time.
Anyway, I found this tape nearly two years ago. I can't express how happy I was when it happened. My heart almost stopped. Until that moment, I had only seen a Xerox reproduction of the cover and couldn't imagine how beautiful it was.
Soon, a compilation of Yassine Nana and his family will be released on Sofa Records & Les Disques Bongo Joe. It features three tracks from this tape, along with others that we'll talk about soon.
Stay tuned!

This is a rare extract from The Dilexi Series, a 12-part weekly program conceived and funded by Jim Newman and the Dilexi Foundation, and produced for KQED (a San Francisco television broadcaster) by John Coney. It represents one of the first efforts to present works created by artists specifically for television. It was a highly effective synthesis of the work of two central figures of U.S. minimalism: the blending of Arlo Acton’s abstract visuals (spherical sculptures of glittering titanium) with a soundtrack in which Terry Riley performed hypnotically repetitive music on a soprano saxophone, together with feedback from two tape machines.
Arlo Acton was an American sculptor and teacher based in Berkeley, California, while living in San Francisco. He was closely associated with the minimalist movement that emerged on the West Coast in the 1960s and beyond.
Terry Riley is considered the founder of minimalist music and one of the most important composers in the United States. He was deeply involved in the San Francisco Tape Music Center, where he worked with musicians such as Morton Subotnick, Steve Reich, and Pauline Oliveros. He studied with Pandit Pran Nath—an influence that was probably the most important in his life. From the 1960s onward, he traveled extensively to India to learn tabla, tambura, and vocal techniques, as well as to Europe, where he encountered other musical influences.
His most important works include In C (1964), celebrated by countless composers since, and A Rainbow in Curved Air (1969), which was well received by the pop music world and industry.
Terry Riley is 91 years old. Arlo Acton passed away in 2018.

God, as Don Cherry said, respect me when I work and love me when I sing.
Don Cherry grew up in LA from the 1930s onward. Born and raised in a family of musicians, he learned the trumpet at the age of four. He would go on to play the cornet for the rest of his life, and was later introduced to the ngoni, a Malian harp.
He was one of the key figures in the emergence of free jazz, alongside collaborators such as Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, and Archie Shepp. He studied Tibetan Buddhism and attended Naropa University—it was these spiritual influences that led him to compose Brown Rice and Relativity Suite.
In 1963, he met Moki while on tour with Sonny Rollins—a Swedish visual artist and designer who would become his wife. This marked the beginning of a lifelong collaboration: they performed together under the name Organic Music, a hybrid live format blending music, performance, theatre, and visual art. Moki’s works were exhibited on stage, and she often designed the costumes.
The footage shared here is a live recording made at Châteauvallon’s Jazz Festival in August 1972, in southern France. A great flower power atmosphere.
It is the first live representation of the newly created Organic Music Theatre. It captures the moment when he publicly shifted his jazz direction, adopting a more mystical stance and approach.
The musicians (Don & Moki, Christer Bothén, Gérard “Doudou” Gouirand, and Naná Vasconcelos) came from all over Europe to take part in this performance, and were joined on stage by a dozen adults and children—including Don and Moki’s son, and a group of puppeteers from Christiania, Copenhagen.
