Cafe40 sharing their Favs ✨
A local collab with Shortje? at @cafe40.ams is coming up this 8th of June 🔥🔥🔥 we are so thrilled this is happening because this is the coolest place in the city with an even cooler film program happening each month. Organizers @claire_broek @_itsquicko_ @sterreruttenn stopped by and shared their fav dvds.
For the movienight at their cafe, we selected two dvds from our shelves made by local filmmakers:
Gooi een VanMoof in de gracht by @sterprinses
And Hobi by @aramisgarciagonzalez
Our colleague @abbymreeves is representing this evening. Be ready to listen and watch these great shortjes and a talk by Abby and Claire.
You can signup now via #linkinbio. Limited spots available so be quick!

We are very happy to announce the fifth edition of Shortje? is a collaboration together with Club VHS! So, mark your calendars, June 8th starting at 20:00, we will screen two unstreamable short films from Club VHS’ collection; Hobi (2024) by Aramis Garcia and Gooi een vanmoof in de gracht (2025) by Sylvia Amptmeijer. ☀️
For those of you who have been living under a rock, Club VHS is a recently re-opened DVD rental store that focuses on a wide collection of different films, especially ones that cannot be streamed anywhere.📀 You can find them at the Eye Museum where their main collection resides, as well as a small collection at FC Hyena. You can further support them by taking a look at their wishlist on letterboxd in the link in their bio, and donating your DVDs if you wish to get rid of them.
So, join us June 8th for some shorts, and stay after to hear from Club VHS themselves where we will talk about physical media and its importance in a brief Q&A session!
Don’t forget to send us your short film, video, performance, experimental piece, 42h challenge, or whatever you might have created, to screen at Cafe40 for an upcoming edition. Submit through the link in the bio!
See you on Monday for a night of some SHORTJES! 🧚

Adding even more names to our KINGSDAY lineup. 👑
A collaboration long overdue — this one has been in the making for years. We’re proud to introduce Panjabi Hit Squad, straight out of Southall, UK, representing a new wave of South Asian electronic sound.
Panjabi Hit Squad are at the forefront of a global movement, blending South Asian heritage with electronic dance music.
Known for seamlessly fusing house, UKG, bass and Eastern rhythms, their sets feel both familiar and completely unique. Happy to finally make this happen!!
This is a free event, just pull up 🧡👑
April is upon us, and so is the fourth edition of Shortje? on April 20th starting at 20:00 with the theme of “geen woning, geen koning”. Come by to watch three different views and experiences on the city with Axelle Marie’s The Earth is Round. They Come Again. (2023), Rares “Pepple” Andronic’s Not So Public Spaces (2025), and a very special screening of a beloved docu fiction film by Yannesh Meijman - Hotel Mokum (2023). You will want to stay through the whole program, if you want to see a sneak preview of an upcoming project that will be screened at Cafe40 at a later date😉✨

The Earth is round. They come again. Is a visual poem shot on 8mm film which is dedicated to the complexity and fullness of life (particularly in the 21st century).
Not so Public Spaces follows a group of teenagers who reclaim urban public spaces, turning them into a vibrant, free playground for their subculture. Their joy and freedom are interrupted when an “angry capitalist” intervenes, using his power to destroy their space and transform it into a sterile, manufactured “paradise”
Hotel Mokum is a docu fiction about a collective that squatted the abandoned Hotel Marnix in the heart of Amsterdam on October 16th, 2021. Over six weeks the collective transformed the hotel into a home, a self-proclaimed free space and an oasis in a city smothered by hypergentrification.

As spring approaches, we introduce the third edition of Shortje? Come by on March 16th at 20:00 to experience two short films that will make you bloom to life🌸 Starting the night, we have How to Outsmart Time and Forge A Living (2023) by Maria Ilieva, followed by De Hemelse Bloem (“The Divine Flower”) by Tessa van der Riet (2022). While you’re at it, order a Bloesem Blond beer to enjoy the screenings with🍻
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Routines are something we all increasingly rely on, in a world framed by time and space. But have you ever wondered what your day could look like if you could do anything you want?
De Hemelse Bloem explores how the current generation of young women can break free from (learned) patterns of guilt and shame surrounding body image and sexuality, and learn to prioritise their own physical pleasure and self-image.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The fourth edition of Shortje? will take place on April 20th! So make sure to submit your short film through the link in the bio.🎥🍿

As the shortest month of the year is upon us, so is the second edition of Shortje? which will take place on February 16th from 20 onwards. For this edition we have three fantastic short films, two of which come from our open call; Computers en Ketchup (2025) directed by Joost Boeke, Echoes (2025) directed by Jor Broeder, and Hoe Liefde en Ik Bevriend Raakten (2025) directed by Joris Spaanderman; all of which explore the complexity of self-love and coming into one’s own skin. ✨
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Hoe Liefde en Ik Bevriend Raakten follows a 21-year-old Manu who has become a victim of homophobic violence. After being forced to move in with his father, he struggles with the ambivalent memories of a broken relationship that surface within him.
Dating can be incredibly fun, but it can also sometimes feel like a complicated puzzle of expectations, insecurities, and awkwardness. For Luuk (20), the main character of Computers en Ketchup, dating is especially complicated.
Echoes follows the aftermath of a complicated relationship, where the young Sasha wanders through her own body, finding moments with her ex; Rifa. With the dark embodiment of her own mind controlling her memories, she slowly starts to lose grip on reality. The deeper she falls, the more absurd these memories get. Moments of clarity appear and she starts to fight back against her evil self.
