Broaden (verb): i. To increase the width, breadth, or scope of, and
ii. To affect or to make something affect more things

Broaden is a purpose-led filmmaking studio. Founded by Bryony Simcox and George Webster, we are a collective of makers and doers who partner with bold and brave organisations. We craft films which shift perspectives, inspire action and deliver impact.

We love what we do, and we're delighted to share our showreel: headphones on, tune in.

And remember, nature bats last.

I’ve photographed a lot of studios.
But I don’t think I’ve ever pedalled over to one quite like @broadenstudio’s.

Tucked into the woodland of Carrington, their studio has been purpose-built by founders Bryony Simcox and George Webster — and it’s a genuine reflection of everything they stand for.

Considered. Crafted. Built with intention.

Broaden is a purpose-led filmmaking studio who partner with bold, brave organisations to make films that shift perspectives. That’s the thing about purpose-led people — they don’t do things by halves.

The studio was built with intention. The work is made with intention. And when it came to imagery that actually reflected who they are, they knew exactly what they wanted.

Turns out filmmakers make excellent subjects.

Independent film making is f*#king hard, guess why...

It's not about talent, it's not about the gear or even the idea.

You can have an incredible story ✓
Amazing crew ✓
All the gear ✓
Passion to tell an important story ✓

But if you haven't got....yep... money, then it's impossible.

It's crude, it's icky and as a Brit I feel crippling cringe just talking about it but, put simply money is the only thing standing in the way of us finishing this film and showing the world this otherwise unseen side to the war in Ukraine.

We need your help, in anyway you can.

Djakuju.

Try and imagine this. Hard? Well for many it's a reality.

Estimates suggest as many as 100,000 people have lost a limb since the war broke out in Ukraine in 2022.

I'm a filmmaker telling their story: 'Djakuju'.

A documentary about

solidarity,
compassion
And human resilience. 🎥

Crowdfunder is live NOW 💥 (link in bio)

"You work with your partner, *and* your dad...?!"

They say don't work with kids or animals, but what about family? For me, it works. Broaden is very much a family affair!

🛠️ My Dad Bruford: Systems Manager. A jack of all trades with a passion for spreadsheets and systems.

📽️ My partner George: Director of Photography. A working-class filmmaker leading our camera team and currently making a doc all about amputee aid in Ukraine.

Yes, there are moments of bickering,
and blurred lines between 'home' and 'work'

But here's what makes it worth it
- radical honesty
- mutual respect
- shared values

The average Brit will spend 3,515 days at work. Why not share those days with the people that mean the most to us?

Why make a film about amputee aid in Ukraine?

When I was interviewed by @therealnihal last week about my upcoming documentary Djakuju, one of the main questions I was asked was - why? Why me, why this story and why now?

Once I saw people crossing the border in 2022 firsthand, the answer was simple.

I know I have to make this film.

//

I’m @georgewebster.dop - a Manchester-based documentary filmmaker at @broadenstudio

@djakujuthefilm is our documentary about amputee aid.

This month, your donations help bring this story into public view - where it can’t be ignored.

Hello? Did you forget?

The war in Ukraine is still happening. 100,000 Ukrainians have become amputees since Putin invaded in 2022. Despite this, coverage is dwindling.

For Ukrainians, the nightmare continues. It’s up to us to keep their stories alive.

We haven’t forgotten - have you?

We’re @broadenstudio - a Manchester-based filmmaking studio.

One grassroots music venue was lost every two weeks in the UK in 2024. More than half of grassroots music venues made no profit at all in 2025. What’s to come in 2026?

Grassroots venues are the pillars of which the UK’s iconic music scene stands upon. Without them, up-and-coming artists don’t get the chance to perform. Music-lovers can’t support their local talent. But with prices rising and funding dwindling, this crucial sector is in trouble.

Broaden backs the underdog.

Our relationship with experimental music from homegrown talent runs deep. From filming sweaty sets at @supersonic_fest in Birmingham, to contemporary classical pieces with @manchestercollective, to hosting our own audiovisual @nightgardenfestival, we are experts in this field.

On that note, behold Broaden’s latest creation: our Psychic Dancehall Hype Reel! Held across multiple venues in Derby, this festival showcased a range of alternative and underground music from top-notch artists. We worked with handheld FX6 cameras and prisms, plus we were joined by Harry and Joe, two student filmmakers from @derbyuni.

We need to keep supporting our local music venues and festivals. Without events like this, our music culture can’t survive.

One grassroots music venue was lost every two weeks in the UK in 2024. More than half of grassroots music venues made no profit at all in 2025. What’s to come in 2026?
