Closing out Women's Herstory Month with a dynamo of a project by Han Dang and Vy Truon, 29-year-old interior architects who were born in Vietnam and met at the University of Houston, College of Architecture and Design. After separate stints at Stantec, Ziegler Cooper, & Gin Design Group, in 2020, they cofounded Very Handsome Studio, the moniker coming from them playing around with their initials, V + H. "We landed on handsome being the key to our name because it's a term often used in design to describe a sophisticated, balanced project, & has a more powerful ring to it than pretty or beautiful. We also thought it would be slightly ironic to name a firm run by two petite females as Very Handsome, which has led to some comical first impressions thus far." Laughs ensued and so have projects. This latest, for Houston foodie influencer Abbas Dhanan aka @houstoneatz of smash burger fame, translated his pop-up concept Burger Bodega into a brick-and-mortar destination. VHS outfitted the 1,600-square-foot former fire station in an energetic interpretation of a NYC bodega, a favorite stop for Dhanan when he'd visit the city. A palette of “ketchup red, mustard yellow, and bodega blue” mingles with pop art–inspired branded merchandise, neon, and black-and-white upholstery that nods to both graffiti and Dhanani’s Islamic heritage. It’s an urban, multiculti mélange the VHS duo refers to as “umami design essence—an overall balance of something that cannot be easily explained but can be easily understood.” Featured in March issue of @interiordesignmag. Congrats goes to Studio DB! Not only for reaching 15 years in biz (▶️ for last week's anniversary-party pic with founders Britt & Damian Zunino) but also for this eclectic & inviting eating nook the firm delivered to recent NYC clients instead of a formal dining room. Although much of the 3,200-square-foot residence, which occupies 2 floors of circa 1900 Greek Revival townhouse in the East Village, has a scheme of serene grays and whites, Britt & Damian added what they call "targeted gestures" in the form of knockout furnishings, "pleasingly off palettes," and unexpected wallpaper that impart individuality to each room. The former two are in full effect here, upholstering the pair of Gropius CS1 chairs by Kateryna Sokolva of Ukraine in contrasting yet complimentary shades of velvet and pairing them with Fort Standard’s striking dining table in fumed & clear oak, a curvaceous built-in banquette covered in Designtex's textured FOMO, & Allied Maker's rad Tri Cone pendant; the Caroline Larsen oil painting ties it all together. Slide 2 shows some of the unexpected wallpaper in the form of Superflower Studio's Peony pattern, which is accompanied by a ceramic work by Venezuelan artist Reinaldo Sanguino. “Working in a prewar building always has its challenges. But the resulting tension and balance between traditional and modern make for an inherently interesting project.” See the entire home in the October (NYC) issue of @interiordesignmag.

A blessing in disguise. When you least expect it. Necessity is the mother of invention. This eye-catching piece by Virginia San Fratello @vasfsf has, for some reason, caused me to spout aphorisms. I think it’s because it basically came out of something—namely the 3-D printer she travels with (yes, she takes it on plane trips, packed in a repurposed hard-sided golf bag)—being broken. San Fratello, an architect, @cristinagrajalesgallery represented artist, & cofounder of Emerging Objects, had already been making unique ceramic vessels that combine machine- and hand-manipulated clay when, during her @cretarome residency, the X axis on her printer started wobbling. “In order to ‘cover up’ the problem, I started twisting elements by hand,” she recalls. The result is Sexy Beast, what she calls a “co-botic” vessel with strands that are cut into a shag, then blown dry. It’s one of 15 boundary-pushing #bigideas in the September issue of @interiordesignmag ⭐️

What I thought was stained glass is actually an acrylic on canvas by Denitza, who I discovered (along with equally vibrant but totally different works by Sip Tshun NG, Liza Domnigues, & Kando ➡️) at the @affordableartfairnyc, on thru 9/25. Having studied art in the Netherlands & NYC, Denitza’a work, which has their signature raised glossy black lines, explores natural environments co-existing with man-made ones, like cities, envisioning them in harmony. “ I get influenced by architecture, nature, and technology, and I love unusual forms. I’m fascinated by light and reflection, especially at night…I like how darkness can transform and reshape an object.”

It's been a great summer for larger-scale installations, & I've rounded up a few favorites. Some I had the opportunity to write about for @interiordesignmag (thank you @chrisbogia @bobbyniven for your time & patience!), some I've just admired from afar. Some are outside, some in. Some permanent, others not. But all are a testament to the awe-inspiring creative spirit that abounds & endures both here & abroad.

Remembering Sam Gilliam. I got to see this acrylic on nylon installation of his IRL last April, when it appeared in “Epistrophy,” an exhibit at Pace Gallery in NYC. It’s been said that Mr Gilliam single-handedly reinvented painting. It’s also incredible that he created this work in 2018, when he was 84. More of his monumental drapes & other works are on view in France for the first time at @fondationlv thru August 29 in “Fugues in Color.” Photo: © Sam Gilliam / Artists

Although called the Easter collection, this ceramicware is def not limited to that holiday. The dishes are not only charming, handmade, and one-of-a-kind, purchasing them also supports the small team of Ukranian craftspeople and artisans composing @gunia_project, including female cofounders @kamenska.n and @Maria.Gavryliuk, who are donating 10% of sales to their country's army. The brand has had to close production and its showroom in Kyiv, relocate to Western Ukraine, and is not able to fully restart its ceramic manufacture, but lots of pretty pieces are still in stock at https://www.guniaproject.com/. The ones shown here - ❣️ that gilded teapot! - are inspired by family warmth, comfort, and Ukrainian traditions as well as the icons found on glassware from the Carpathian region.
