From wildfire ash to water vessels. 🔥💧

These 3D-printed jugs are made from a custom filament infused with California wildfire ash, transforming destruction into something that sustains life.

Inspired by ancient amphorae, botijos, and huacos, they merge deep history with contemporary making.

Phoenix rising.

See them in person at @cristinagrajalesgallery in NYC.

Baby, it's cold outside!

Another throwback today as I was looking through past projects.

Most clothing is defined by the context in which it is worn. In today’s society, we are all subject to the short-lived and commercially promoted clothing that fashion magazines and retailers promote; these clothes are most often mass produced. Most people don’t think of clothing beyond it’s seasonable or decorative qualities however there is a primacy in the physical functionality of the garment in it’s provision of shelter against the elements. Clothing covers and protects the body like architecture. As John Carl Flugel observed in his book The Psychology of Clothes “ Clothes, like the house, are protective; but, being nearer the body and actually supported on it, they are (unlike the house) portable. With their help we carry – like snails and tortoises- a sort of home upon our backs, and enjoy the advantages of shelter without the disadvantages of becoming sessile.”

The R-13 jackets are made of Owens Corning batt insulation. R-13 batt insulation is a building material commonly used to insulate walls against heat loss; it is a product that has been in existence for over 50 years. Batt insulation, not unlike mass produced clothing, is a readily available, off the shelf building material that can be found in any building supply store. #architecture #buildingmaterials #fashion #architecturefashion #style #raelsanfratello #ivhcreate

A 20 year old throw back today! The VAC-PAC.

The VAC PAC is complete and completely functional. It is made out of Tyvek, a protective material that is traditionally used as a weather-resistant barrier wrap for homes and buildings, it helps combat wind, water, moisture and air infiltration. It is a traditional building practice that has been in use for over thirty years. The use of a material such as tyvek has a history that alleviates any notions of current trends, ornament, taste or personal expression- allowing the jackets to exist outside the world of fashion but because of their inherent mode of construction they simultaneously exist outside the realm of conventional building.

3D printing is not just about plastic. Virginia San Fratello works with materials like sand, sawdust, clay, and even bonemeal, to explore how design and sustainability can come together through local and natural resources. In this episode, she talks with Vanessa Costalonga about the role of hands-on experimentation in her teaching and practice, and how working across disciplines can open up new ways of thinking about materials for architecture or even for regenerating coral reefs.
Interview by Vanessa Costalonga. Produced and edited by Jennifer Bartmess. ©Chair of Circular Engineering for Architecture lead by Prof. Dr. Catherine De Wolf, ETH Zurich @ethzurich.

The American Institute of Architects College of Fellows Fund, Inc., awarded the 2025 Latrobe Prize to a nine-person research team to explore how building facades can enhance human health by functioning as air purifiers.

The AIA College of Fellows sought research proposals that: 1) connect the built environment to human health both theoretically and practically, and 2) emphasize architects' vital role in improving community health through design.

The research team focused on two primary goals: identifying the optimal filter for the system through iterative testing and fabricating a proof-of-concept fresh-air bus shelter. The first phase involves testing various filtration methods including High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, hydrophobic adsorbents (e.g., activated carbon), and biological/living systems (e.g., fungi, lichen), as identified in prior research. The second phase has two parts: optimizing surface striations or contours to enhance airflow into the tubes, and designing the overall shape of a partially enclosed curbside shelter to maximize airflow.

2025 Latrobe Prize Research Team:

Doris Sung, Ivan Bermejo-Moreno, Mitul Luhar, Jiachen Zhang, Virginia San Fratello, Edward Avol, David Sloane, Sigrid Andriaenssens, Russell Fortmeyer

Thrilled to be a part of this team! @aianational @sjsu.ha @sjsudesign
