FACT #003: Brooklyn’s greenway connects people to public transit — particularly the ferries! A well-designed and well-maintained greenway system provides a critical piece of New York City’s transportation infrastructure by safely linking communities and destinations and providing last-mile connections to transit stops (including bus, ferry, and subway). The Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway’s waterfront location gives its users access to @nycferry locations, from Greenpoint to Bay Ridge. Ferry connection was the highest reported type of transit connection along the Greenway, especially in Brooklyn Bridge Park, Red Hook, and especially in Sunset Park, where nearly 20% of users were connecting to the ferry.

Source: Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway User Study, started in 2019 and completed in spring 2024 through a partnership between Brooklyn Greenway Initiative, @regional_plan, Numina, and @nyc_dot. #brooklyn #greenway

We’ll be direct: fourteen years is TOO LONG TO WAIT for a greenway. BGI executive director Hunter Armstrong stood alongside elected officials @rep_velazquez @dangoldmanforny @alexaforcouncil @bkbpreynoso as well as @brooklyncb7 and community organizers on May 4th to celebrate the opening of the 20-block section of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway from Sunset Park to Red Hook. After *more than a decade* of advocating for safe infrastructure. Our @nydailynews op-ed shares more:

“[Opening of the new greenway segment is] a genuine reason to celebrate, and an early and very encouraging indication of the Mamdani Administration’s commitment to developing the city’s greenway system. But before we toss the confetti, it’s worth sitting with an uncomfortable fact: this greenway was promised to New Yorkers by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2012. Fourteen years, four mayors, and more than a decade of community advocacy separates that promise from Monday’s ribbon-cutting.” BGI and our colleague-members of @nyc.greenways established the NYC Greenways Scorecard for accountability. For 10 years, the landscape at the Naval Cemetery has been Brooklyn Greenway Initiative's signature green space and respite for the public on the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. Climate-resilient ☀🌧 A pollinator meadow of native plants 🐝 A habitat for birds, bats, and insects 🦇

In 2026, as Brooklyn Greenway Initiative celebrates a decade as creator and steward of this historic site, we are thrilled to announce a first for the landscape, the greenway, the borough of Brooklyn, and New York City at-large: the Naval Cemetery Landscape is now the Greenway Botanical Garden at the Naval Cemetery, and will soon be the first-ever botanical garden in NYC to be accredited by Botanical Gardens Conservation International. We hope you'll join us on Thursday, June 4th, at the Gala for Greenways, our annual fundraiser and the official launch of the new Garden.

Let's talk waterfront! Next Tuesday, May 19th, BGI executive director Hunter Armstrong will join with colleagues for the 2026 WATERFRONT CONFERENCE: Future Proofing Our Waterfronts, hosted by @waterfrontalliance.

The 2026 Waterfront Conference will convene leaders from government, industry, science, and community sectors — BGI leadership will be speaking about micromobility and Blue Highways 🌊 — to tackle one of the most pressing challenges of our time: how to plan, design, and build resilient waterfronts in the face of accelerating climate impacts and shrinking political and financial support. Attending? Let us know in the comments, and be sure to say hello! 👋

14 years and four mayors — that's how long Brooklynites and New Yorkers waited for the greenway segment from Hamilton Avenue in Red Hook to 29th Street in Sunset Park to open, earlier this month. In a new op-ed published in today's @nydailynews, Brooklyn Greenway Initiative executive director Hunter Armstrong introduced our strategy for @nycmayor @zohrankmamdani to give "greenway governing" its due: "[BGI and] the NYC Greenways Coalition is calling on Mayor Mamdani to establish a Greenway Task Force, housed in the Mayor's Office and overseen by a deputy mayor with the authority to convene and direct all relevant agencies. Such a taskforce would cut through bureaucratic logjams and hold agencies accountable to schedules that respect the years communities have already waited." Way to go, Sunset Park and Red Hook! What a pleasure to join with BK Community Board 7, public officials @rep_velazquez @dangoldmanforny @nyc_council38 @bkbpreynoso, community organizers @uprosebrooklyn @getwomencycling @transportationalternatives @transaltbk @ny4p @bikesouthbklyn @pineappleride, and fellow Brooklynites today at the newly-opened greenway section from Hamilton Avenue to 29th Street!

For more than a decade (over 14 years!), the community has advocated for safe greenway infrastructure along this corridor. @nyc_dot planned it, @nycddc built it, and now it’s up to all of us to enjoy it, program it, and promote it! But the work isn’t quite done: this newly-opened section of greenway isn’t yet connected, on either end, to the larger Brooklyn greenway network. That’s where *greenway governing* comes in! Following the success of “pothole politics” in the mayor’s First 100 Days, let’s now turn our collective sights to the incredible benefits greenways offer our city and prioritize those needs. Brooklyn Greenway Initiative and our colleagues @nycgreenways are at the ready to work with all partners to ensure another decade-plus doesn’t pass before we see greenway segments from 29th street to 39th and 39th to 58th Streets, as well as Hamilton Avenue to Ferris Street, to be built. It’s a fact: this greenway provides safety, enjoyment and clean, healthy transportation for the Sunset Park and Red Hook communities. We need to complete this vision, and soon! #brooklyn #greenway #sunsetpark #redhook

More greenway improvements are coming to #Brooklyn! After announcing the Historic Brooklyn Greenway as one of its priorities in 2023, and following the highly-anticipated release of the Harlem River Greenway Plan in late 2025, the city is now moving forward on redesign of Grand Army Plaza to remove car and truck traffic, and connect it to Prospect Park. What does this mean for greenways?

Grand Army Plaza and Prospect park are the linchpin of the Historic Brooklyn Greenway — improving Ocean Parkway from Coney Island to Eastern Parkway and eventually connecting to Highland Park. The Grand Army Plaza redesign is an important link in that connection.

Surface renovations, enhanced user safety features, and better connection across the borough's network of greenways. #GrandArmyPlaza, at the western end of #EasternParkway, is an important hinge point for those continuing onwards towards #OceanParkway, just south of #ProspectPark. This planned work will improve the user experience for those walking, rolling, or riding along the greenway, as well as those simply relaxing in-place.
