PSO no.256 | Ice Scream Hello Shell Song
So excited to share this sonic and visual collaboration with the amazing @JoeyFauerso!

We have been talking about doing a PSO collaboration for sometime, but after seeing her amazing show, Bedroom Paintings, on view @rubycity in San Antonio, I was super inspired to make this happen. The show combines mural-size paintings, prints, and even a couch Joey designed, all centered around a 4-channel video.

Joey contributed the spine of the audio work presented here. She sent over a bunch of audio files in which she rhythmically layered her voice, creating a hypnotic beat pattern. I added sub-bass synth, guitar, a clap track, various effects, and a snippet of a field recording of an ice-cream truck. In one of the tracks Joey made, there is a hooting dove keeping perfect time.

The image came from the combination of three of Joey’s visual works. Joey’s paintings are often made through a process of subtraction, scraping away the paint she initially lays down. In the same spirit, but kinda in reverse, I mixed the code up and combined a couple of the images she sent over to create the final composition. I am grateful for the latitude Joey gave me to add and remix her work.

Up for another week...PSO is pleased to present a text, sound, and image piece by Houston-based artist Lauren Klotzman. I have admired Klotzman’s work for a long time and was blown away by their recent solo show at Ivester Gallery. I especially love the video paintings they make with analog modular synthesizers and the relationships between them and the gouache paintings.

Lauren Klotzman is an interdisciplinary artist who seeks to push the boundaries of what painting is; their studio is a feedback system containing an anti-disciplinary practice driven by many media forms. As a video practitioner, Klotzman is an instrumentalist, operating an analog modular video synthesizer to create “video paintings” via electricity. In all media, Klotzman is interested in how time and energy – as intertwined forces – compose not only the acts of art making, but existence and consciousness. Based primarily in Texas, they are a recent MFA graduate from Yale Painting. Current research topics include historical computing, New Materialism, perception, consciousness, non-human intelligence, and “nostalgia of the future.” They have exhibited internationally, and their writings have been published by Hyperallergic and Glasstire, among others.

no. 254 | A Shimmer of Sparrows, a Freight Train, and a White-Winged Dove

This week’s recording from the porch is dense. There is a lot to listen to. I set up an extra mic in the middle of the yard to pick up more birds and street sounds and boy howdy, did it deliver. At one point a group of sparrows, which I am going to call a “shimmer,” joined a chorus of a distant train and a white-winged dove soloist. Trying to make the guitar sound just another orchestra member, I also added a bit of spacey echo to the sparrow’s song. The picture is from a little earlier in the year when we had a series of magenta sunsets.

I hope this pleasant complexity is a respite and a welcome intrusion into your inbox.

PSO is pleased to be a part of WILD FOR GOOD a day celebrating wildflower blooms and the Shield Ranch community.

We are so happy to be involved and are just one of the many activities and things to see on Saturday.

@shield.ranch is 37,000 acres of Central Texas goodness that functions as a conservation easement, nature lab and experience center, and much more.
