In honor of Michele Burke.
The last time I saw micheleburke_mua was by chance. I’d stopped at a red light, while driving through Toluca Lake’s Equestrian center, and she, who lived nearby, was out for a walk. Although it had been years since we’d worked together, I think the smiles on both our faces were genuine, as was the desire to get together for a coffee and a chat.
“Don’t be a stranger,” she shouted, as the light turned green and I started to drive off.
It was the great and long dead make-up artist, Jack pierce, who first introduced us. In 2003 Scott Essman asked me to make up his friend, Perry Shields, to play Jack so that he, and some of his “creations,” might add color to the Local 706 Make-up Artist and Hairstylists annual awards ceremony. Jack Pierce was to receive a lifetime achievement award, posthumously, obviously, for his work of such memorable characters as Frankenstein’s monster, the Wolf Man, and the Mummy. I lead the team turning Perry into Jack, while Michele, handled the make-up for The Bride.
I think Michelle must have seen something in me at that event, some modicum of talent, because shortly thereafter, she called and asked me to create the masks and other prosthetics for Mission: Impossible: 3. Of course I was thrilled to do so. This led us into collaborating on turning Tom Cruise into Les Grossman for Tropic Thunder.
During our time working together, Michele and I grew close. She referred to us as kindred spirits; I did not, then, and I do not, to this day, disagree. We had very different backgrounds and yet we shared many similarities in our lives and careers, as well as our struggles to gain respect and feel relevant. We had something of a falling out, sadly, over the credit we each thought we were entitled to for Tropic; the details of which are not important, suffice to say that we rarely spoke after that. My feelings for Michele were complicated. I liked her. I loved her. I felt betrayed by her. And I wish, upon hearing of her passing, that I had taken her request more to heart and not been a stranger.

Crossing "See a pig person teat-feed Augie Duke" off my bucket list.

And that's my review of Barney Burman's #WildBoar. An extremely dark and twisted tale, but not one that is completely void of feel-good moments. For example, Augie Duke's wet t-shirt, Jessica Sonneborn's no t-shirt, and the Swine family band jammin' out in the shed were truly soul-pleasing scenes in an otherwise absurdly disturbing story. Good stuff.

Currently available to watch on @tubi @plex.tv @fawesome_tv @therokuchannel and @primevideo. With all of those options, there ain't no reason not to watch it.
