Today, May 21, marks exactly 20 years since the world premiere of Daft Punk’s Electroma at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.

“With this film, we took the same approach as when we first started making music. Creating without rules or standards. Taking a free-spirited approach to something new that you don’t really know, and learning from scratch.”
On the film’s reception:
“We expected it to be less popular than Discovery, of course. The film is experimental and inaccessible; however, it’s a film that doesn’t require your brain to work.” — Thomas Bangalter 🤖

These comments come from interviews conducted around the time of the film’s release and reflect Daft Punk’s artistic vision: a free, experimental project without traditional narrative pretensions, shot intuitively like their early musical works. Bangalter also served as the film’s director of photography, and prepared for the shoot by exhaustively studying cinematography magazines.

In 2026, to mark the 20th anniversary, Bangalter will take part in a post-screening discussion following the 4K restoration at the Tribeca Film Festival (June 8), alongside Cédric Hervet and Tony Gardner (@tonygardner)

Behind the Scenes with CHUCKY!
Erik Beck shares the “control gloves” that he designed for Chucky’s hands while they were still in development… affectionately renamed “the Power Gloves” by the crew.
Final modifications included a “battery gauntlet” on the forearms to power the gloves on set so Eric had more freedom to move around, and a wrist controller for Chucky’s hands added between the structure of the battery gauntlet and the glove.

Hard to believe “HAIRSPRAY” was almost twenty years ago already!

It was a great experience designing the character of Edna with John Travolta’s input, and even more fun watching how he brought her to life on set every day for three months!!

(And now he’s directing a film - from a script adapted from his own 1997 children’s book…a man of many talents!)
