I was recently offered the opportunity to make some new work for a show @galerie.shibumi along with @katharine_nf and @jessfugler to run during NY’s art and design filled month of May. I haven’t been the best at promoting it given the busy time of year, but there are a few more days to catch it!

All experiments of lingering ideas around structure, reduction, dismantling, and reuse including this console table I made in collaboration with @katharine_nf whose alt-decor practice includes tassels. It nods to its namesake, Eileen Gray’s Lotus Table, but the tassels serve more than an aesthetic function by holding the table together.

May is Design Month at @galerie.shibumi

Please come by and view Soft Landing featuring Eliza Axelson-Chidsey, Jess Fügler, and Kate Ferguson.

Soft Landing is the first exhibition of its kind for three New York Design veterans, Eliza Axelson-Chidsey, Jess Fügler, and Kate Ferguson. Hosted by the new Two Bridges-based Galerie Shibumi, this will be its inaugural presentation during the art and design laden month of May. With over four decades of combined professional experience in the design industry, Soft Landing acts as an introductory moment for the trio as they step out from the shadow of brands, corporations, and auxiliary roles.

While the pieces range from furniture to sculptural tassels, there is a shared affinity for color and materials. Largely the product of late nights, weekends, and stolen moments, the work is underpinned by rich narratives and personal philosophies.

Eliza Axelson-Chidsey’s pieces include large scale furnishings that combine an interest in 3D puzzles, standardized materials, and a quest for adiabatic design. Jess Fügler prompts the viewer to look closer at her whimsical combination of handcrafted details and industrial production in furniture and lighting inspired by personal memories. Kate Ferguson, working under the project name Katharine.NF, challenges conventions around ornament and functionality in decor to present vibrant, soft-sculptural forms that evoke feelings both tender and macabre.

Soft Landing juxtaposes these disparate practices as part laboratory, part demonstration, part celebration of the opportunity, and the audacity to make anything at all.

@galerie.shibumi is proud to introduce the next artist who will be featured in our group show - SANCTUARY - on Friday, July 19th from 6-9pm at 13 Monroe Street, Manhattan.

Eliza Axelson-Chidsey @axelsey (b. 1982, California) is a designer, artist, and curator based in New York City. Her interest in material culture is manifest in explorations of form, value, and ephemerality. Excited by research and concepts, and informed by her senses, she is regularly reminded how much learning is found through doing. She holds undergraduate degrees from both Parsons School of Design and Eugene Lang College of the New School University, and a masters in Design Products from The Royal College of Art in London. @axelsey

XYZ Table
A side table testing the structural limits. A 3D puzzle. Constructed from solid Douglas fir with endlessly matching grain to distort perception.

💡✏️ @axelsey
🪚 Anthony Turner
📸 @michaelpopp

This was/is an idea that got stuck in my head. I cobbled together a few prototypes out of plywood to prove it would work and then showed it to my brother Anthony, a talented woodworker, and gave him a drawing as a gift. We talked about the possibilities of different finishes and grain treatments but I didn’t really expect him to make anything. A year passed and I was surprised with one of the most generous gifts I’ve ever received. He meticulously recreated my design out of solid Douglas fir in such a way that the grain always matches, at every seam, as if an MC Escher illustration come to life.

I have a few prototypes for sale. DM for more details.

Bringing @paraphernalia.exhibition to life with @fuuugs over the last year was a truly rewarding experience.
Thanks to all the designers who participated, submitted, and cheered us on, as well as all the friends and family who helped make it possible.

N’est-ce Pas

A flame worked glass vessel that variously references 17th century tulipières, water pipes, and trap pottery. Whether meant for communal smoking or celebrating individual flowers depends on perception rather than intent; superfluous or illicit depending on time and place.

Open Source Lounge
Perhaps my favorite of the collection due to my fondness for the moving blankets, dolly, and ratchet straps from which it’s made. In keeping with the rule, no cutting, gluing, sewing, drilling or screwing was applied.

It looks somewhat diminutive, but it’s actually quite louche and sexy.

Made from crates, a tarp, and bungee cords, without cutting, gluing, sewing, drilling or screwing.

It’s between table and counter height, but nice in an entryway.
