The 1% Campaign is a social media–driven fundraising initiative inviting Asian American communities and allies to become the 1% by showing up for and supporting Asian American initiatives. Inspired by the reality that Asian Americans account for only 1% of reported cultural engagement, this campaign reframes 1% as a call to action rather than a statistic.
From May 11 to June 12, 2026, every donation of $1 to Civil Art (through any channels) will be listed as a donor on Civil Art’s public website. Donors’ names will also be printed in a physical exhibition catalog when it is published in 2027.
A minimum of $10 through TapKat enters you into the 1% Campaign sweepstakes for the chance to win prizes from our brand partners.

It helps build Luminous Path, a major fundraising exhibition produced by Civil Art this summer at Rockefeller Center, while also ensuring your name becomes part of the project through publication in a future book.
Funds raised will support Civil Art in continuing to champion emerging API artists, writers, and curators, while also supporting Apex for Youth in providing mentorship, education, and mental health resources to Asian American youth from low-income and immigrant backgrounds.
No donation is too small when we show up together.

An evening of myth, ritual, and rare intimacy.
In February 2026 at Nudibranch (@nudibranchnyc), artist Ho Jae Kim (@artjkim) and chef Jeffrey Kim (@jeffkim23) presented Herculean Dinner in New York City, a limited art × culinary pop-up experience.
Conceived as a multisensory meditation on the Twelve Labors of Hercules, the experience unfolded through a sequence of courses, original illustrations, and poetic texts—each tracing a passage through endurance, beauty, and transformation.
Set within Nudibranch’s private dining room, reimagined as an intimate gallery, the evening moved beyond the conventions of dinner into something more ceremonial: a choreography of flavor, image, and language. Guests received a specially designed Booklet Menu accompanying each labor, while original artworks and live poetry framed the night with quiet drama and emotional depth.
At once opulent and deeply human, Herculean Dinner reflected on perseverance in impossible times—and invited guests to gather in recognition of beauty, courage, and the tender act of carrying on.

Stagecoach (Iterations 1 and 2) is a diptych: two paintings that are closely related yet subtly distinct, each presenting the same stagecoach scene with slight shifts in emphasis and resolution. Rather than pursuing a single “perfect image,” the pair proposes that perfection is relational—when two seemingly complete versions sit side by side, each makes the other’s differences feel like imperfections. In that comparison, the work opens into tension: the image becomes a spectrum instead of a fixed conclusion, and the viewer is invited to move between the two canvases, mentally overlaying one against the other.
Across both paintings, a stagecoach is pulled from opposing sides. The scene is rendered with a believable clarity, yet the logic of it unravels on reflection—an impossible tug-of-war staged in an open field. This contradiction reframes the stagecoach as an emblem of pioneering and journeying, but with no stable direction: left or right, forward or back. In the space between the two iterations, what comes into focus is not a single depiction but the Platonic “perfect idea” of the stagecoach—an image imagined in the in-betweenness, formed through friction, uncertainty, and the beauty of imperfection. Often, the journey itself becomes more compelling than any destination.
“Unstable Conditions” opens tomorrow at @harpersbooks 6-8pm in Chelsea.

Excited to share this small painting at @latitudegallery_newyork this week in the group exhibition Unbridled: Horsin’ Around.
Rocinante is the name of Don Quixote’s horse in Miguel de Cervantes’ classic novel Don Quixote, a skinny, aging nag that the delusional knight imagines as a magnificent steed, symbolizing the contrast between reality and fantasy.
