Proud to share that 𝘍𝘦𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘥’𝘈𝘨𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘻, the new short documentary by Eva van Tongeren, will be premiering at the 42nd Kurzfilm Festival Hamburg (@kurzfilm_hamburg) in june, in a beautiful feminist program!

𝘍𝘦𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘥’𝘈𝘨𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘻 weaves testimonies of three courageous women in Agadez, a desert city shaped by geopolitical pressure and Europe’s border policies. Through their voices, we witness a lived feminism grounded in solidarity, community, and everyday resistance.

Amidst an icy dreamscape, a woman takes refuge in a black metal karaoke bar. Outside, she finds a lone penguin stranded in a tree, cut off from its colony.

We wel­co­me you for the avant-pre­mi­è­re of Femmes d’Agadez!


Agadez is weig­hed down by geo­po­li­ti­cal inte­rests and the harsh European bor­der poli­cy. Online, I met Amina Weira, a Nigerien film­ma­ker. Together, we searched for a way of fil­ming that would make this cru­el poli­cy visi­ble. For six years, we col­lec­ted ima­ges remo­te­ly, Femmes d’Agadez is the result of the­se years of exchan­ge, research and resistance.

I decided to pre­sent Femmes d’Agadez together with Return of an Adventurer (1966) by Moustapha Alassane, a pio­neer of African cine­ma and one of the few, well-known film­ma­kers from Niger. Return of an Adventurer is a beau­ti­ful­ly shot Western; a sun-dren­ched dark come­dy exa­mi­ning mas­cu­li­ni­ty, macho cul­tu­re, vio­len­ce and the glo­ri­fi­ca­ti­on of the American film genre.

We offer eve­ry­o­ne a Nigerien snack. :)
