A little snapshot from ‘sans’ for @cellooctetamsterdam by @setfiretoloraine . I had the pleasure of arranging and performing this new piece as part of ‘Borrowed Time’ at @rewirefestival last weekend. As a fan of Loraine’s, it was a huge honour to work on her music. And as always, it was inspiring to see the attention to detail that my colleagues in the octet give to music and sound. They certainly helped to take my arrangement to a whole new level and I’m extremely grateful.

I made a music video for Nustix. I hope my year 10 film studies teacher would be proud.

I’ve had loads of help along the way. Thanks to @renevanmunstermusic for listening to countless shitty tracks over the years and always providing helpful feedback. Thanks to @no.compliments for not only mixing these tracks to perfection but for sharing so much valuable information and experience. Thanks to @mert.audio for the excellent job mastering. And thanks to @aartstrootman for loaning me the synth that provided the foundation for a lot of these tracks.

Although there are only 4 tracks, they’re each comprised of samples and ideas stitched together from A LOT of other unfinished tracks and versions made over the past 2 years. Making music takes time and is hard! If you’d like to support, you can do so in a couple of ways:

It’s been a long time coming but I’m releasing my first solo EP on the 17th of October. It’s called Nustix and features music that I made using my cello, my laptop, my phone and a borrowed synth.

The whole process has been bubbling away for the last few years and I’ve had loads of help from many friends who I’ll be mentioning properly on release day.

Our newest single “Everytime” is out today on Bandcamp and most streaming services*. Our love for this track runs deep. It’s a cyclic, ephemeral lullaby featuring @alistairsung on cello, hyperreal flutes (@ericasynths Steampipe), and subterranean drums.

‘Song of the Earth’, a song cycle by @davidlongstreth for @dirtyprojectors @andrederidder and @we_are_stargaze is out via @nonesuchrecords @newamrecords @transgressivehq today. It was a joy to record this epic work with the stargaze crew augmented by @bellinspace @feldou @maiafffff and @davidlongstreth a few years back in Hilversum. This is one of many favourite moments.

Longstreth says that while Song of the Earth, “is not a ‘climate change opera,” he wanted to “find something beyond sadness: beauty spiked with damage. Acknowledgement flecked with hope, irony, humour, rage.

Yesterday I had the immense pleasure of premiering ‘Cocon’ at @rewirefestival with my cello buddies @cellooctetamsterdam . This project was something of a dream in that it combined my love of electronic music with my love of the cello and featured amazing works by @browniebonbon77 Jesse Broekman @k__lc @_kamaru_ @abulmogard and @cat_barbieri . Added to that, was the incredible stage design by @nickverstand and the fact that the set included my arrangement of ‘Scratches on the Readable Surface-live’ by @cat_barbieri . I’m so grateful for the serious attention the octet gave to making the arrangement work, for my cello/electronic music partner in crime @renevanmunstermusic for listening and thinking along over the past few months, and of course to Caterina for creating such an amazing track, providing great feedback and being open to us performing it.
