HAPPENS

31 OCTOBER - 18 NOVEMBER, ASC GALLERY [@ascgallery / @aschandbagfactory]

HAPPENS links Vauxhall art-neighbours ASC Studios and Beaconsfield Gallery Vauxhall as both cultural institutions celebrate 30 years of operation in South London.

HAPPENS recognises Beaconsfield’s longstanding methodology of co-creation and artistic experimentation with artists diverse in age and identity. The link with ASC is made explicit by exhibiting the personal work of Beaconsfield’s founding-directors A.D Crawforth [@adcrawforth] and Naomi Siderfin and their ASC studio mate Minna Haukka [@minnahaukka], together with artists Emily Mulenga [@emilymulenga] and Ellis Parkinson [@ellisparkinsonartist], and New York-based eco-feminist A.L. Steiner – all of whom extend their commissions from Beaconsfield’s anniversary programme ‘Manifesto for Sustainable Experimentation’ – offsite at ASC Gallery.

HAPPENS reflects Beaconsfield’s commitment to the present moment. Key community relationships are strengthened through linking exhibitions that explore environmental issues at many levels.

Beaconsfield Founders and Co-Directors Naomi Siderfin and David Crawforth [@adcrawforth] play a central role in Manifesto for Sustainable Experimentation's evolution, holding space as artists, curators and creative partners.

Working under the collaborative moniker BAW (Beaconsfield Art Works), Siderfin and Crawforth set the exhibitionary tone with visual and sonic interventions throughout the show. The project seeks to interrogate the (un)sustainability of contemporary art practice and to propose positive strategies for nurturing creativity through a number of outlets; sculptural, sonic, transient moments and archival material. Over and above their work as curators, Beaconsfield's founding directors have maintained a collaborative visual arts practice, making numerous critical interventions in public space since 1994.

From monthly events as Nosepaint in Arch 66, to public works of art, to partnerships with salient institutions and relationships with generation-defining artists the world over, the seminal works produced throughout the years by Beaconsfield are a testament to three decades of ongoing effort from Siderfin and Crawforth to maintain a space in which contemporary art cannot only survive but thrive.

Manifesto for Sustainable Experimentation is open Wednesday - Saturday, 12:00 - 17:00, until August 9.

Final days to see!

Have you ever wanted to create a fast-sculpture?
Now’s your chance‼️

We are running a sculpture workshop as part of our Workshop for Enthusiasts series on Wednesday 26 February 2-5pm.
Learn from Anssi Kasitonni’s fast-sculpture techniques. Sculpt an object of your own desire from cardboard and plaster and discuss the foundations of this new commission. Limited places. Book your tix via our Eventbrite. Link to the listing above.

Anssi Kasitonni’s sculptures and videos are complex, hand-made productions that reference popular culture and are filled with humour. During his Beaconsfield residency Kasitonni researches the locale and delves into the psyche of South London to inspire the new work.
