The Spanish Embassy has completed a significant restoration, reaffirming its commitment to artistic heritage and sustainability.

Mass-produced lampshades have been replaced with handcrafted pieces designed to last over 100 years. The project incorporates Corallo porcelain by Spanish artist Ana Bridgewater — lighter, more efficient, and made using half the usual raw material. Its coral-inspired texture enhances brightness while contributing to a healthier environment.

A milestone for craft, design, and gender equality. The Spanish Embassy in the UK has named its first-ever female ambassador in the UK, considered the oldest of Spanish embassies in the world, which has been led by male counterparts for centuries until now. My installation of more than 130 porcelain lights in 3 different styles for the various areas announced the new light that this embassy would encompass, and it is a great honour to be part of the Spanish Patrimony. This project was designed using cutting-edge technology aligned with porcelain craftsmanship. The effect is a blend of tradition and innovation coming together in this wonderful building in London.

A moment of recognition, and a signal moment for contemporary craft and design ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Warmest congratulations to Ana Bridgewater on the unveiling of a remarkable new lighting installation at the Spanish Embassy in London this November 2025.

Commissioned by the Spanish Ambassador to the United Kingdom, this work stands as a poised articulation of innovation, sustainability, and material intelligence.

Bio Corallo Porcelain, a radical material using 50% less mined resources and shaped through a process where air itself becomes structural. Lighter in weight, antibacterial, and non static, it resists dust and brings a gentle luminosity to the historic townhouse setting. The result is an atmosphere that feels both refined and deeply welcoming.

Drawing from coral formations, the installation translates the living language of the sea into an architectural field of light. Delicate surfaces ripple with elegance, reconnecting illumination with natural ecosystems and reminding us of the poetic intelligence embedded within the natural world.

This project reflects Ana Bridgewater’s enduring commitment to reviving handmade traditions through sustainable innovation. By reducing waste and extending material longevity, The Ambassador’s Legacy articulates a future facing vision where craft, authenticity, and ecological responsibility move forward in quiet alignment.

A wonderful feat, and a meaningful benchmark for what thoughtful design can achieve. Congratulations Ana! 🥂

Here’s a sneak peek of my stand at the Material Matters fair during 3daysofdesign, where Max Fraser tours the festival in Copenhagen alongside designer Daniel Rybakken

The countdown to Material Matters Copenhagen continues. Abalon is led by internationally acclaimed designer and sculptor Ana Bridgewater. @abalonuk_studio creates bespoke pieces using handmade porcelain that can be dyed with oxides to mimic lava or coral.

At the fair, it will be showing an innovative light, crafted from its recently developed 3D printed Bio Carallo, created in conjunction with Lowpoly Design Studio. The material uses approximately 45 per cent less mined material than traditional porcelain, offering a more sustainable approach to lighting and interior design.

According to Bridgewater: ‘This project marks a significant milestone in my journey, as Bio Carallo is a pioneering, printable porcelain composite designed for intricate, sustainable production. The innovation opens new possibilities for eco-conscious design, while maintaining the timeless beauty of handcrafted ceramics.’ Sounds fascinating doesn’t it?

Material Matters Copenhagen runs from 18-20 June at Gammel Dok, Christianshavn and is part of @3daysofdesign

For more information check out our website (link in bio). We can’t wait to see you there.

Bio Corallo, A New 3D printable Biomaterial for Digital Craft and Architecture. recent launch at Milan Design Week this May introduced a new range of lighting pieces 3D printed using Bio Corallo: a porcelain-based biomaterial is currently on development. The project emerged from an internship and collaboration with Lowpoly Studio, a Madrid-based digital fabrication lab founded by Gianluca Pugliese. Known for his pioneering work in sustainable design and material repurposing, Pugliese focuses on innovative approaches that reduce environmental impact. In recognition of his contributions to the field, he was named Ambassador of Italian Design in Spain in 2022. @lowpoly.studio#makinghistory

New Wave Lamps were created in collaboration with Memories of the Green at Blackhorse Studios in 2023. The bases, crafted from repurposed elm, were hand-turned by Arturo, while the porcelain forms were sculpted in Ana’s West London studio.

This series was first exhibited at @materialmatters 2023, followed by @ruupandform, and is currently on view at @adhgallery.London.

Only four pieces remain each one a reflection on fragility, transformation, and the power of sustainable craft.

New Wave Lamp with Tomobako Box as a Bedside Table
This design pairs a sculptural lamp inspired by ocean waves with a traditional Japanese tomobako box, typically used to protect and present ceramics. The piece draws attention to two intertwined issues: coral fragility and the environmental impact of packaging waste.

Packaging accounts for over 40% of global plastic waste, according to the United Nations Environment Programme. Most of it is single-use and often non-recyclable, contributing significantly to ocean pollution and harming fragile marine ecosystems such as coral reefs.

In contrast, the tomobako box—made from untreated wood and traditionally used in Japanese pottery—is a beautiful, functional, and sustainable alternative. It can be reused as storage, repurposed as furniture, or simply allowed to biodegrade when no longer needed. This design challenges the disposable mindset, offering a poetic solution where packaging becomes part of the object’s story and life.

“Coral Fragility” – Sculpture, 60 cm tall x 30 cm diameter.
Crafted from fine porcelain and repurposed off-cuts of Perspex – a material first developed in the 1930s for use in aircraft canopies. The sculpture draws inspiration from the delicate yet resilient structures of coral reefs, echoing their vulnerability in the face of environmental change. Its interplay of translucent surfaces and porcelain forms invites reflection on the fragility of marine ecosystems and the enduring beauty of natural forms.

Time is infinite, but life is not. I often reflect on the end while I’m still alive, wondering how people will view my obsession with form and light once I’m gone. This fascination has been constant since university, where I discovered my calling to invent form. I see so many positive contributions that these forms can make—how they can simply sit in a space and give someone confidence, help them relax, or allow them to savor a fleeting moment of their time. Perhaps that’s why my curiosity about death transforms into a profound love for life.
