Åsmund Lahaug was our Artist-in-Residence from Norway. His residency was made possible by the @nordicanalognetwork residency program.
@aaklahaug residency lasted three weeks, during which he lived in an apartment by the sea in eastern Helsinki. He worked in our darkroom, traveled around Helsinki and Finland and gave three workshops on lith printing!
“I arrived in Helsinki with pretty much blank sheets, no negatives brought from Oslo, so early in the stay I had to find some interesting spots to photograph. I managed during the first few days to shoot, develop and work with one film of 35 mm and 2 120 films (I also have 2 exposed films from the latter part of my stay, that must be developed when I'm back in Oslo). My working project during the stay was two-sided: I held three workshops on lith printing technique, two at Mörk and one @luovake in Jyväskylä, and spent the rest of my time alone in the darkroom trying to find ways to work with the lith printing technique on various "difficult" papers, meaning papers that needs an extra (chemical) twist to work in the lith printing process. I managed to get a little further on this path during my stay. I also made a few medium large prints on good paper, some of which are shown in enclosed images. All in all, the residency stay has been a very good experience, giving me a chance to focus on photo work (for me: city- and landscapes and lith printing) for a longer period of time.”

Photographer Åsmund Lahaug - @aaklahaug - from Norway is travelling as an Artist in Residence for Nordic Analog Network to the Finnish Darkroom Association darkroom Mork in Helsinki - @finnishdarkroom . And then is also invited to visit the darkroom Luovake in Jyväskylä, Finland - @luovake - to teach the workshop: «Lith printing – amazing life between great contrasts – an introduction”
What is a lith print, and how is it made?
Class leader: Åsmund Lahaug
Class date: 3.10.2024 16 – 21
Price: 40 € for our members, 80 € non members /Limited places!
Course is in english
Enroll by sending email to info@luovake.fi with header Lith printing
A lith print is often characterized by a more graphic and contrasty expression than a
traditional black and white darkroom copy. Nevertheless, in some of the intermediate parts
of the print, subtle nuances and vivid shades of grey and grain structure are given. Or brown
tones. Or red tones. Or ...
The process of making a lith copy has something almost alchemical about it: The exposed
paper needs a long time in the developer bath, and it is a by-product created during the
development that eventually blackens – or «liths» – the copy, from the darkest zones and eventually into the lighter (in English «infectious development»)

The second open call for the Nordic Analog Network’s residency program has ended, and we have selected our new residency artist!
Åsmund Lahaug (b. 1968, Oslo) lives and works in Oslo as a social worker/educator (the Norwegian term is Miljøterapeut, which is difficult to translate into English). In addition to his work, Lahaug spends most of his time working with analogue photography, writing (short stories) and pottery. In his photographic practice he mostly uses a 4x5' large format camera or a 6x7 cm medium format camera. Lahaug is a regular user and member of the Cyan darkroom in Oslo. Since the beginning of 2020 he has been working exclusively with the lith printing process. @aaklahaug
