“The landscape of dance is always evolving, always shifting. It’s like cycles: the new becomes old, the old becomes new, things die and then they’re born. Everything is constantly copying and imitating, with the desire of being original. I’m experiencing a lot more creativity from people that are underrepresented within the arts and occupy spaces in an I don’t give a fuck kind of way. I still do believe colonialism is present. It’s embedded within systems that many are now working towards understanding. It’s not about dismantling tradition, though, but getting rid of ideologies that were built on colonial structures. Even in Indian classical dance, there’s a huge effect from the British. My very being in the U.K. is through colonization and displacements and migration of my family, who have been born in three different continents and moved across the globe as British subjects. This all affects the arts and my work. I choreograph to make something in my mind tangible— to understand it further, to explore the possibilities of my imagination, and to ask how human emotion can be translated. I create and move to help understand myself and how I belong in the world.”- Vidya Patel

Lots of events happening this week! First is a performance/ work in progress I’ll be sharing at “MAULETI “ this Friday part of a two day multidisciplinary exhibition that has been curated and produced by dear friend and extraordinary artist @_aishanighosh

The movement performance is happening at 6pm and is a response to photographic series created and visioned by @bykrunal @krunaltailorhennaartist, photographed and collaboration with @gndphotos and @ginibhogal @maalalondon this will be the first time of this work in progress and responding through movement language which incorporates classical Indian and contemporary forms and just ways that I’m curious in moving currently! The photographic series will also be exhibited over the two day exhibition 💕

I’ll go days listening to one song sometimes and then eventually I’ll go back to listening to a mix of all genres again. Any genre from anywhere in the world.
Currently, I’ve returned to the ghazals by Shahenshah-e-Ghazal (King of Ghazals) Ustad Mehdi Hassan, especially this one which is in my favourite raags, Jaijaiwanti. Ghazals are described as a poetic form that originated in Arabic literature, were refined in Persian poetry, and later flourished in Urdu and South Asian musical traditions. There is so much more to this! Majority of them may have the theme of longing, romance and beautiful poetry.
The poetry is by Aziz Hamid Madni, describing healing power of spring…
“Taza Hawa Bahar Ki” means The Fresh Breeze of Spring. This has and will be repeating of the next few days before hyperfixatung on another song, artist, genre…

As Spinning in Flow approaches this Sunday, and with Qawwali close behind, I’m hoping to make space for ghazals too. As I plan I’m in two minds between this and another piece…
