TRAD is a theatrical tear-down of the modern phenomenon of trad—or traditional—wives and the associated Christian conservative arsenal of beliefs, which also indulges in our collective yearning for fantasies of escape. This trad wife is eternally pregnant with her husband’s seed: What could possibly shake the ripeness of her faith in this idyllic existence?!

The peaches are bursting on the branch of your homestead’s orchard, while below ground your modest 50,000 sq/ft bunker is nearing completion. You hear capital H-I-M whisper through the prairie grasses a song that melts your obstinate will, beckoning you to enter a wonderland of reliance and submission. ​

Up until now, I haven’t spoken publicly about this, but I would like to share. Both of my parents died from preventable/treatable illnesses, in large part because they could not afford the medicine and care they needed to survive. To live in the wealthiest country on earth, and not have access to basic necessary healthcare, is, in a word, DELUSIONAL, in another, CRUEL, and in another, RIGGED. The rich continue to amass more wealth, while the poor are further crushed by having to forgo their most basic needs of having sufficient food and medicine. I wanted to share this in part to say, it doesn’t have to be this way. I come from hardworking, flawed, beautiful, crazy (I say with reclamation and love), deep, sometimes sad, irreverent, funny, loving, sometimes destitute, creative, bad-teeth, big-laughed, loose-jointed people. I miss my mom and dad a lot, and wish they’d had more time on this earth in those bodies. My mom ended her lifein her home in East Atlanta in 2013 after being sent home from the ER without life-saving anti-psychotics. My dad died of a heart attack in his home in East Tennnessee in 2021, after he couldn’t afford the sky-high prices of insulin and other medicines he needed to treat his diabetes and heart disease. It’s FAILURE on the part of these so-called united states to provide for the people living in them. I was indoctrinated to believe that their deaths were because of a failure on my family’s part. If we’d only done this, if we’d only gotten it together in time. I see now, that as my people would say, that’s hogwash. And of course, there’s generational baggage to deal with - silence, isolation, unshared pain. But these are all products of the conditions we’re living under, the sea we’re swimming in. I share this knowing that I’m not alone in my heartache. So many people go through it, in their own particular way. The current gutting of already tenuous social services is unconscionable. Stay strong by way of staying connected. Also want to say, I’m grateful for the life I have. With beautifully loving friends, family and chosen family, who buoy me. I’ll be sharing it from here with ma n pa in the great beyond.

This Monday night you can catch Eva Wolfson, Hannah Mitchell and Meaghan Robichaud in our exciting new WIP show BOUFFON BABIES!

Who are these babies?!?!?!

Eva Wolfson (she/her) is an NYC-based creator and performer.

Her work, which is informed by a love of queer/trans performance, physical theatre, and clown, has been shown at ?!:New Works (The Brick), Brooklyn Comedy Collective, Brooklyn Art Haus, Pink Metal, NYC Fringe (Under St. Marks), LimeFest (The Tank), and Pinebox Rock Shop. Eva holds a B.A. in Theatre and Psychology from Williams College, where she received the Gilbert Gabriel Prize for excellence in theatre.

Hannah Mitchell is a performer, theater-maker, and educator whose process is guided by the improvisational arts, especially clown, bouffon & being a human with a body. She regularly collaborates with various ensembles to make new works, including with her clown company, WüfPak, and the experimental theater collective, CHILD. She’s performed at venues around NYC including The Public Theater, The Brick, The Collapsable Hole, Lincoln Center, LifeWorld, The New Ohio, Theater Mitu, HERE Arts, Target Margin, and The Brooklyn Comedy Collective, among others. And regionally/internationally she’s perfromed at The Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Bard SummerScape, Princeton Seuls en Scène, & The Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Meaghan Robichaud (they/she) is a fearless performer whose work spans clowning, acting, directing, and writing, but always gravitates back towards plunging into the taboo, the wild, and the weird.

Their original work which includes theater, burlesque, and variety shows has appeared on stage at venues like Loading Dock, The Brick, CATCH / The Invisible Dog, Brooklyn Art Haus, The Tank, Club Cumming, Purgatory, and The Kraine.
