grateful to have offered vinyl installation support to my dearest angel shanel edwards for their photo exhibition “Mirror Is Not A Metaphor” at the Arts League. 🪞🌿✨
this project feels like a tender threshold for me. as a big step toward exhibition design, and a reverence in witnessing how angel’s work serves as an intimate reflection of how to be in relation to art practice, community and queer becoming.

FULL LENGTH post of my work in-progress “Pro+Pro+ception” shown at @leahsteindanceco Studio Works in Dec 25.
“Pro+Pro+ception is a rumination on the black queer experience. in a culture that simultaneously hyper visualizes, commodifies, and disappears black queer bodies,
proprioception —felt awareness of the body’s position and motion— is a tactic of self-fashioning that both anticipates and evades the white supremacist gaze.
i’m interested in the many ways we lean into our isms as love letters and forms of refusal.”
this work is in conversation with:
•“I’ve Been ’Buked” as held in Alvin Ailey’s Revelations
sonnet excerpts from Danez Smith’s “Bluff”
•“STOP HATING: A SPELL” from “Emergent Strategy” by adrienne maree brown
•“Gesture, Ephemera, and Queer Feeling” by José Esteban Muñoz
•“Crisis in the gallery: Curation and the Praxis of Justice” by jaamil olawale kosoko
i’m rooted in deep study & reverence for how black queers negotiate opacity within black social space as protection, refusal, and preservation. thinking through the speculative queerness of ailey, ephemeral evidence of muñoz, liveness as strategy from brown, the presence of queerness in the black church, and how black technologies of sound + semiotics can distort/camouflage/refuse surveillance and extraction.

Cory Seals @_cmosis is an interdisciplinary artist and community curator born in Atlanta, GA and based in Philadelphia, PA. Seals’ motivation is to use movement and sound to create a landscape of improvisational practices, promiscuous futuring, and emergent strategy towards collective action, radical care, and illuminating the diversely interconnected experiences of black and queer people. His interdisciplinary work seeks to identify restorative frameworks for self and community care through illuminating histories of black queer desire as embodied research and meditative/explorative/exhibitive performance. With projects ranging from experimental live performance to archive design— Seals devises fantastical and functional tools for black queer futurity.

I’m interested in the many ways we lean into our isms as love letters and forms of refusal. If W.E.B. DuBois, who gon be the gworls?”

“Pro+Pro+ception is a rumination on the black queer experience. In a culture that simultaneously hyper visualizes, commodifies, and disappears black queer bodies, proprioception —felt awareness of the body’s position and motion— is a tactic of self-fashioning that both anticipates and evades the white supremacist gaze. I’m interested in the many ways we lean into our isms as love letters and forms of refusal. If W.E.B. DuBois, who gon be the gworls?”
