Cyanotype animation and print installation for a branded experience event on Brick Lane, London, this past week - themed on the sun and light. Every frame hand printed as cyanotype for large scale projection in the space.

Alongside @hfletch and I led a cyanotype workshop for guests of the event, with help from @jazmyntyne - several hundred cyanotypes made from collaging workshop by @danikm βœ‚οΈ

Thanks to @nine8collective for the invite and @nasty.nige for his terrific organising of event. πŸ’™

I will be previewing my upcoming work CAPTAIN COOK IS DEAD at @goldsmithsuol on 2nd June as part of the @visualanthropology_ Public Programme Summer 2026. Tickets are free and can be found via the link in my bio.

CAPTAIN COOK IS DEAD is an experimental moving image work that uncovers how the enclosure and privatisation of common land in Europe was used as a model for colonial land seizures - through the lens of Captain James Cook and his pacific voyages.

As I am from the same area as Captain Cook, where he is revered as a local hero, I wanted to adopt a critical perspective on his legacy. Equally, being from rural England, I am keenly aware of the lasting effects of enclosure and the increased privatisation of land.

Materially connected to the land, the film is made with oak, foraged from the forest behind the farm a young Cook once worked. This includes 35mm and super 8 processed with oak bark extract, homemade oak gall ink for drawing on frames, printing on wood and leaves, and so on. Cook’s ship was also in part made from Yorkshire oak.

The film is also scored with analogue sound processed through tapes by the inimitable @jack_donnison β€” thanks also to @animateprojectsuk and @right.2roam @jon.m0sesfor supporting the ideas and development of the work.

Tickets in bio for Goldsmiths event! 2nd June 5-7PM.

Toned cyanotype animation - before toning - toning process πŸŸ§πŸ§‘πŸ»β€πŸ©°πŸŸ¦ Cyanotype animation toned wth lily flowers for a commercial client recently.

I thought I would also share the process video of toning, as recently I had a small run in with an AI company, where the cyanotype animation process was 'recreated' digitally with the help of their software. So here's how it's done by hand, no AI used!

Every frame hand printed as a cyanotype and toned with lily flowers, as well as lavender, and some jasmine to create a variance in the brown tones of the final ballet loop.

Thanks to all those that supported me and @bigactive for support on this piece.

Pinhole I made during our MUDDY developer workshop @studiocyan in Oslo, during our Sustainable Darkroom tour of Norway and Oslo this month. MUDDY developer is a semi-solid film and paper developer that combines just wood ash and used coffee grounds with hot water, to create a developer with mud like consistency. πŸͺ

Innovated by the genius mind of @curiosolab - the developer is especially effective for paper based prints and pinholes, in this case a homemade camera from our amazing host @stigmw - exposure was around 30 seconds and development happened rather quickly.

MUDDY developer has an incredibly long shelf life as it is made from two preservatives, and also can be reused for sometimes as long as a year. It needs to be used at hot temperatures of around 40-50 degrees to be most effective however! In addition cleanup is a bit long as you can see here!

Thanks to all those that hosted us on our trip to the Nordics including @samuelianmccarthy @hdk_valand and @hfletch for organising. MUDDY developer recipes can be found in the latest Sustainable Darkroom book on our website.

I am currently in Gothenburg, Sweden, to give a talk on gelatine in analogue film and a vegan gelatine workshop as part of the Flower Power Photography Symposium hosted by @hdk_valand and @samuelianmccarthy πŸ„ 18th and 19th March - free to join! πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺ

My colleague @hfletch will also be leading a tricolour cyanotype workshop and giving a talk on fossil fuels in the photo industry. From there we will be heading to Oslo for more workshops @studiocyan 🌿

It would be wonderful if 2026 was the year I could elevate my gelatine research to work in camera. If any darkrooms or organisations in the North of England are willing to support, please reach out!!

Clip is from my documentary I AM A DARKROOM produced by @dobedoprojects @tyronelebon watch via their website.

4x5 colour sheet film shocked with static electricity featured in my film A Guide to British Trees, as a way to incorporate electricity into the making process. The final clip is also 35mm shocked with electricity.

To create the images, you run the film through the nodes of a hand-cranked static electricity generator. Due to the metal in the film it conducts the electricity, recording the shocks which are then revealed after developing. ⚑

A Guide to British Trees is an experimental short I created as a neo-creation myth. I wanted to incorporate natural elements into the creation process, including burying film in soil, burning frames with fire, and shocking with electricity - amongst others.
