The Plastic Detox
The official page of the @netflix doc “The Plastic Detox” & the Unplastic Your Life campaign. The science is clear: plastic is harming our health.

Nothing is more painstaking than researching every ingredient in every product.
Would quite literally rather stare at a blank wall. But here’s the thing — if you make a film about everything that’s wrong with the products people use every day and don’t give them anywhere to go after... you’re just stressing people out. Which, honestly? Annoying.
So when the co-director of “The Plastic Detox” watched people spiral after seeing his film, he did something about it. He built The Unplastic Shop — trusted brands, vetted products, zero research required.
Comment “unplastic” and we’ll send you the link.We think you’ll love it (If you don’t, message us!)

Have you ever wondered what plastics are doing to human health? An Academy Award®-winning team set out to answer this very question.
What they discovered was shocking.
Plastic is associated with up to 16,000 chemicals. 4,000 of those have been found to be harmful—they can impact fertility, disrupt hormones, and lead to cancer and other chronic illnesses.
With $250 billion in annual U.S. health costs related to chemicals in plastic in the U.S., the evidence is overwhelmingly clear: plastic is an urgent health crisis.
“The Plastic Detox,” a new Netflix Original film, investigates the answers we’ve all been seeking. Stream #ThePlasticDetox on @Netflix starting March 16.

Once you start looking for it, you see it everywhere. Not just in the packaging, but in the makeup itself too.
Most makeup actually contains plastic. The ingredients that make products look smooth, glossy, and flawless often come from synthetic polymers like polyethylene, nylon, or acrylates. So the finish you love is sometimes doing a little more than you thought.
9 out of 10 cosmetic products contain microplastics – even in products labeled clean or green. Those labels are not universally regulated, so they do not necessarily mean plastic-free.
Washing it off does not solve your problems, it spreads them. It causes those tiny plastic particles go straight down the drain, where they are too small to be fully filtered out and end up in our waterways.
And it's not just the product but also the packaging. Most makeup is stored in plastic containers, which can slowly leach small amounts of chemicals into the product over time, especially with heat or repeated use. So your makeup bag is basically marinating plastics...not cute. 🤢
This is not about being perfect or throwing out your entire makeup bag. We know how expensive that is. It is just about knowing what you are using and making small swaps when you can.
So you can be more informed, covered in less micoplastic, and still hot. 😎

Unfortunately, BPA-free does not always mean Bisphenol-free.
Here's what parents need to know. Bisphenols act as endocrine disruptors that can mimic hormones and cause reproductive or developmental issues. Once society got wind of how harmful Bisphenol A (BPA) was, it was removed from many products. However, manufacturers introduced alternative chemicals, like BPF and BPS, that are just as harmful to our health. This allows brands to market products as 'BPA-free' even when they contain these nearly identical substitutes.
Whenever possible, opt for stainless steel or glass alternatives.
Comment with "BABY BOTTLES" if you want to know where you can get some plastic-free baby bottles.

Once you see this, you can't unsee it.
We send our kids outside to exercise. To be healthy. To run and sweat and grow strong.
And we dress them in athletic clothing engineered to never wrinkle, never stain, and never smell.
Those properties come from harmful chemicals. PFAS. Phthalates. Antimony. Formaldehyde. Baked into the fibers your child is wearing against their skin for hours.
Then we put them on a field made from shredded rubber tires (crumb rubber artificial turf)which contains benzene, arsenic, lead, and dozens of other compounds that off-gas in the heat.
Now picture this. Your child. Running hard. 85 degrees. Heart pounding. Breathing heavy.
Their skin is warm. Their pores are open. Their lungs are working overtime.
In the exact moment their body is most open and most absorptive, they are surrounded on all sides by harmful chemicals.
It shouldn't be this way. Tap the link in our bio to learn more. Comment TURF to be sent a link with more info.

Here’s what parents need to know: a 2022 study published in American Chemical Society found that many school uniforms sold in North America contained PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” which are often added to make fabric stain- and water-resistant. Researchers tested 72 uniform items and found evidence of these chemicals in the majority of them, with some of the highest levels in polyester-blend pants, skirts, and polo shirts.
Parents shouldn’t have to worry that their kids are wearing chemicals linked to cancer, infertility, and vaccine effectiveness.
Then there’s lunch. Many school meals are still heated or served in plastic trays or wrapped in plastic coverings. Research shows that heating food in plastic can release microplastics and chemicals into food. Many of these chemicals can be endocrine disruptors, which impact hormone function and fertility.
Lastly, one of the most overlooked areas of concern…is artificial turf. Hailed as an innovative solution to generic grass…the harmful impacts have been overlooked for decades.
Artificial turf is made from plastic, rubber, and synthetic materials. These materials can release PFAS, phthalates, heavy metals, and PAHs (chemicals linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and neurological harm).
The reality is—decisions have been made in our school systems that have been based on cost and convenience rather than our children’s well-being and health. Our children should not be guinea pigs for the chemical industry.
What can parents do? Speak up at PTA meetings, talk to the decision makers at your school. Share the study below to help raise awareness.
Our growing children shouldn’t be surrounded by harmful chemicals, period.

THE CHEAPEST PRODUCTS ON AMAZON, TEMU, or OTHER ONLINE RETAILERS ARE CHEAP FOR A REASON.
The U.S. does not require most imported products to be tested before they hit shelves. What does that mean for us?
It means third-party marketplaces can list products, call them whatever they want, and they can be made with harmful chemicals or illegitimate materials. The drive for the lowest possible price encourages cutting corners at every stage of the production—with health being the last priority on manufacturers minds.
So that $8 “stainless steel” colander can be make with FAKE stainless steel.
Get this…in 2024, China Central Television exposed 19 thermos cups using a lower-grade steel with manganese levels six times higher than the standard — prolonged use of which can lead to heavy metal poisoning. They were marketed as “stainless steel.”
Smaller factories have been found using scrap steel loaded with impurities like lead and cadmium, and a 2023 investigation by China’s Market Regulatory Bureau found that nearly 8% of stainless steel products didn’t match their labeled materials.
And this isn’t just a stainless steel problem. A Washington State investigation found that 16 out of 43 children’s products purchased on Amazon had illegal levels of lead and cadmium — and even after Amazon was notified and said it removed them, investigators found the same products back on the platform.

This is a great cheat sheet, save it for later if you’re looking to buy new clothing!
Here’s the thing: ALWAYS CHECK THE LABEL!! Make sure the clothing you’re buying is made with 100% natural fibers. It might say “cotton t-shirt” on the sign in the store, but when you check the label, it’s 40% cotton, 60% recycled polyester(aka plastic).
Unfortunately MOST clothes today are blends, so be wary when you shop.
