Lifesaver, 2026.
A series of 7 prints based on an original photo of a lifesaver 🛟 ring, buried in a field of Queen Anne’s lace in a London park.

Took me a while to feel like there was enough here: initially it was a very simple colour blend, with the “Life” text in a gothic font but I then added a pixelated version of the life ring itself… and then hand applied India ink to the letters. I kept wanting it to be messier, more arresting and less neat. This is the first time I’ve used coloured India ink and I’m really happy with how much you can lean on the water to actually create little whorls and eddies with the pigment. See the close up image for a bit of this lovely detail.

Mitsubishi Zero Youts, 2025. This is a series of 20 screen prints, each with unique hand applied India ink details. It’s based on an original photo from 2008 of a wrecked Mitsubishi Zero fighter plane, taken on Peleliu, a Pacific island where the Japanese and Americans fought in 1944. War wreckage - tanks, APCs, guns, airplanes - still lie in the jungle, gradually decaying.

This print shows a Mitsubishi Zero aircraft abandoned in vegetation. The peaceful scene I photographed bears no resemblance to the violence of 1944, when casualty rates were extreme.

I’ve applied hand-drawn India ink marks to the print, reminiscent of Japanese calligraphy and the carved characters on Japanese war graves across the island. The graffiti reads “youts” - a South London slang corruption of ‘youths,’ that I see and hear every day around me. This word connects the young men who fought there (many barely out of their teens) with contemporary struggles facing young people in the 2020s.

A quick and easy guide to a cool screen printing special effect that’s actually super simple: blending between a couple of colours. I often find myself doing this to provide a bit of depth or interest and it provides a great contrast to the big, flat powerful colours screen printing does so well #screenprint #colour #screenprinting

Spent some time this weekend photographing my latest series of prints as I waned to submit them to a few galleries and competitions. Here’s a set of quick tips for getting really nice, sharp, clear pictures of prints or flat artwork - nothing complex but a few tweaks to camera settings and use of a tripod and good natural light can result in great images.

Opening night / private view of @bainbridgeprint exhibition. Super happy to see “Tank Tracks” as part of it, and some great work from @sonsolesprintstudio friends like @juliavogl_socialsculpture and @alexandrahobson_art

Some favourites of mine were by @jesstownsendart, @hammerchen1113, @marcopoma_ and @bristowjoshua - lots of very skilled engraving, lithography and photogravure.

Show is on tomorrow and over the weekend @aschandbagfactory - go check it out 🖼️

Heavenly thunder, quantum physics

I worked on this print just before heading off for a summer break. The main design is a re-print of a German print from 1564 - February 19th to be precise - a notice announcing

“Celestial phenomenon seen over Leipzig … perhaps northern lights which is interpreted as a theological omen for the Last Judgement.”

The original has been preserved by Zurich’s Zentralbibliothek and I found it online. Interesting to think I am reprinting it 461 years later also using a manual process. It is quite lovely - the typography is quite basic, reflecting the ephemeral, news-y nature, but there is so much character in the clouds, columns and lightning. I wanted to do something to modernise the design, and I played around with some counter-positioning, eventually landing on a quote from Einstein and Niels Bohr:

Einstein: God does not play dice!
Bohr: Stop telling God what to do

This was from a conference in 1927 when they were discussing quantum physics.

Heavenly thunder, quantum physics

I worked on this print just before heading off for a summer break. The main design is a re-print of a German print from 1564 - February 19th to be precise - a notice announcing

“Do Nothing for as Long as possible” is one of @brianeno’s Oblique Strategies - a set of small flash cards based on creative strategies he and @davidbowie used on the Berlin albums. The lettering for this poster was drawn by my 10 year old son, and then the photo is an old gold Roller I saw in Greenwich which I found very inspiring.

I’m taking part in a charity bike ride for @palaceforlife - raising money to help support their work with young people in South London. They do great stuff with fitness, careers and general advice / counselling on how to get ahead in life. If you’d like to support me, I’ll happily send you a bike print 🚲.
