The POWER of GOOD animation

We often talk about how incredibly complex CG characters and assets fall apart due to the way they're animated. Netflix's Yu Yu Hakusho is an excellent example of the opposite. While their CG work is quite good, it's far from photorealistic. Yet the animation more than makes up for it, really selling the VFX illusion.

Props to @scanlinevfxfor their excellent work on this series.

This creature is REAL?!

Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein took a very successful approach to its VFX. Instead of relying heavily on CGI, as many other big-budget modern movies do, they built many of the creatures and elements practically, using CGI only where needed to sell the illusion. Props to VFX studio MR.X for their work on this scene.

Gollum FORCED them to Create New Technology.

In order to bring Andy Serkis' performance to Gollum, the incredibly talented animators and VFX artists at WETA had to literally develop new technology. This is one of the reasons why Gollum's character was so groundbreaking in CGI, back when The Fellowship of the Ring was released in 2001.

Gaussian Splats ARE the FUTURE..

4D Gaussian Splats are pretty much a baby technology, but one that Wren believes has the potential to revolutionise many aspects of VFX.

Do you think they are the future?

Tempered glass is HARDER than you think..

14 Years ago, our friend Clinton Jones @_pwnisher_directed a live action fan short film for YouTube based on the video game Sleeping Dogs. With the fights choreographed and coordinated by EMC monkeys, it's still to this day a masterpiece of stunt work.

Find the movie in YT: "Live Action "Sleeping Dogs" Fight Film"

Is this THE COOLEST rig EVER?

A camera mounted to a knight's helmet, mounted to a rider's chest, mounted on a fake horse, mounted to an ATV.

What a crazy rig A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms pulled off to show us the limited, claustrophobic POV from inside his helmet.
