Carole Harris

↪️ Meet the Artists of TBA 2026
Carole Harris is a Detroit-based fiber artist whose work expands the possibilities of quiltmaking as a contemporary art form. Introduced to textiles at an early age, she has maintained a studio practice for decades rooted in material exploration and craft.
Her work reflects on memory and time, using colour, fabric, and composition to create layered surfaces that echo lived experience—moments that blur, fade, and return.
Harris holds a BFA from Wayne State University and, after more than three decades running a commercial interior design firm, transitioned in 2007 to focus fully on her studio practice. She is a recipient of the Kresge Arts Foundation Fellowship, and her work is held in collections including the Detroit Institute of Arts. Recent exhibitions include Art Basel in Paris and a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit.
At the 2026 Biennial, Carole Harris’s work will be co-presented with the Art Museum at the University of Toronto (@artmuseumuoft) and made possible with the generous support of the Women Leading Initiative. More details to come.

The #WarholFoundation funded exhibition “Carole Harris: This Side of the River,” on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MoCAD), is the first comprehensive museum exhibition dedicated to Detroit-based fiber artist. The exhibition honors her pioneering vision, one that has redefined the language of quilting and transformed it from a domestic craft into a mode of abstraction, cultural storytelling, and political reflection.
Harris’s work incorporates irregular shapes, layered textures, and diverse materials, situating her within the lineage of Black abstraction while challenging the historical divide between fine art and craft.
The Foundation supports MoCAD for championing artists at pivotal moments in their careers and linkgin their practices to the legacy of artists who came before them.

My beloved Detroit,
I am beyond honored and pleased to be included in the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit’s (MOCAD) reopening Spring 2026 exhibition season, alongside Olayami Dabls and Martha Mysko.
This Side of The River (https://mocadetroit.org/carole-harris-this-side-of-the-river/) is an extremely personal and meaningful exhibition for a variety of reasons. It is my first comprehensive solo museum exhibition at MOCAD during a pivotal time in the museum’s history, as it celebrates 20 years servicing this community.
Over the course of my decades long career, as a fiber and textile artist, I have found meaning and joy in creating art out of imperfectly perfect pieces of everyday materials that I find in neighborhoods and communities surrounding us.
My techniques and works are in many ways tributes to Detroit - to its evolving spirit, its ambition, its resilience, and its reinvention.
The title, This Side of The River (https://mocadetroit.org/carole-harris-this-side-of-the-river/) , reflects Detroit’s position along the U.S.–Canada border, symbolizing the flows of migration, labor, and cultural exchange that define the city. It, once again, is a celebration brought to life by woven textures of my city, my heritage, and my time, one that speaks of beauty, endurance, and the art of making meaning from what remains.
The grand reopening is on April 25th, from 11AM - 5PM. I will be on hand from 1PM - 5PM for greetings. II hope you enjoy the exhibition!
With Peace & Gratitude, Carole
Tomorrow is the last day for my solo exhibit “Time and Memory” at the Flint Institute of Arts. These are just a few of the works you’ll see. Thanks FIA, Thanks Sarah Kohn. It has been wonderful❤️!!!!!

Carole Harris’ solo exhibition “Threads of Time” at the Flint Institute of Arts is featured in IMPULSE Magazine 💫💫💫
Carole Harris’s “Threads of Time”, by Peter Kelly, January 25, 2026.
“ Carole Harris’s Threads of Time is a survey of seventeen quilts by the Detroit-based artist, one of several exhibitions this season featuring Harris in her home state of Michigan. Harris’s solo exhibition, This Side of the River, will open at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit in the spring of 2026, and the artist opened a two-person exhibition at Matéria Gallery Detroit alongside Jova Lynne. Her robust Midwest exhibition history echoes the strong conceptual grounding intrinsic to each art object, with her largest influences being local artists. The exhibition title aptly gestures towards the essential time-based dimension of Harris’s practice, while many of her quilts formally reference a spatial dimension: the architecture of Detroit.”
