Noe Kuremoto’s Jōmon: A Mother’s Anthem, is open in 5VIE as part of Milan Design Week.

Kuremoto’s Jōmon Vessels are a love letter to mothers everywhere, meant to honor the complexity of motherhood: the beauty and the pain; the struggle and devotion; and the ferocity, hope, and daily care.

The works are inspired by some of the earliest known pottery in the world, dating back to the Jōmon period (14,000-300 BCE). Traditionally, these vessels were used in both domestic and ritualistic contexts, and often embraced as protective objects. Kuremoto’s pieces are recast as both talisman and tributes—homages to the daily moments of light and shadow that together make up a life. Her vessels are an expression of her own experience as a mother and an offering to women across generations and cultures.

Her work centers our daily acts of care for one another as sacred and powerful, and celebrates making as a form of resistance.

As she notes: “This work insists that creation—of life, of art—is still a radical, triumphant act. Clay remembers. Fire transforms…I see art and parenthood as vehicles to pass on infinity to the next generation.”

It’s been a joy to collaborate on this project, which champions so much of what our world needs now. Thank you to beautiful Noe and to the incredible 5VIE team.

Noe Kuremoto: JŌMON – A Mother’s Anthem

With JŌMON: A Mother’s Anthem, Noe Kuremoto presents a lyrical installation of new sculptural stoneware vessels for Milan Design Week 2026, curated by Anna Carnick and supported by 5VIE. The project unfolds as a tribute to mothers everywhere, reflecting on the beauty, struggle, devotion, and resilience embedded in the experience of motherhood.

The works reinterpret ancient Jōmon-period vessels (14,000–300 BCE) as contemporary talismans—objects that carry protection, memory, and ritual significance. Hand-built in clay, they evoke ancestral forms while speaking to present-day questions of care, identity, and resistance.

For Kuremoto, based between London and Lithuania, clay becomes a vessel of memory and transformation, where making is an act of transmission across generations. The pieces hold a quiet tension between fragility and strength, presence and absence, life and ritual.

“We created the Voices Vessels to honor the brave voices of the Woman Life Freedom movement. This piece is 3D printed in sand. The form represents an act of freedom –a woman’s pleated dress whirling in the air as she dances”.

The pursuit of freedom and equality is a global concern, and we hope this piece encourages reflection on this important issue.

Our Voices Vessel 03 was recently part of the Crafting Community exhibition curated by @acarnick @thefoundryberlin during @hallen_kunstfestival @wilhelmhallen @berlinartweek. The exhibition was produced by @tatjanasprick and made possible thanks to @bocci and @johannesschoen

Thank you @clemenspoloczek for the video

It was a real pleasure to be there and to meet all the incredible artists that were part of this soulful and powerful exhibition! A huge thanks to all who made this possible!

Chiaroscuro: A Light in the Darkness
(2025)

The intimate site-specific installation consisted of a two-minute, forty-seconds long multisensory performance, featuring new glass and light works in conversation with a custom light choreography directed by Rive Roshan and created in collaboration with light artist Bram van Ravenhorst and an original soundscape by composer Julian Enequist. The scenography takes inspiration from chiaroscuro, an artistic technique that creates a pronounced contrast between areas of light and dark within a composition, first introduced during the Renaissance.

MILAN DESIGN WEEK 2025

CHIAROSCURO: A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS
@5vie_milano

“If everything around seems dark, look again, you may be the light.”
-Rumi, 13th-century Persian poet

For Milan Design Week 2025, Rive Roshan presents Chiaroscuro: A Light in the Darkness, a multisensory installation. Created in collaboration with @acarnick, the installation invites visitors to contemplate the question “where do we turn for strength and connection in challenging moments?”.

Chiaroscuro: A Light in the Darkness takes place from 7 to 13 April 2025 at Via Cesare Correnti 14, 20123 Milan, Italy.

Project by @riveroshan
Project Advisor @acarnick
Light Choreography by @bram_blind92
Original Soundscape by @enequist_
Vocals by @mahsa_vahdat

Special thanks to 5VIE, LED Label, Erik Hillestad and Stimuleringsfonds

On the occasion of Milan Design Week 2025, Rive Roshan’s Chiaroscuro (literally translating to light-dark) is a site-specific installation inspired by the extraordinary ordinary—moments that spark awe and ignite and restore us, from the sky’s vastness reflected in a drop of water, to the oscillating resonance of a chanting voice. Against the backdrop of this complex sociopolitical period—which can feel far-too-often dark—the project is intended as an offering of light, and a reminder of the beauty and power that exists within and all around us.

The intimate installation comprises a two-minute, forty-second long design performance featuring new Rive Roshan glass works in conversation with a custom light choreography created with light artist Bram van Ravenhorst, and an original soundscape by composer Julian Enequist, featuring vocals by acclaimed Iranian-born, US-based singer and women’s rights advocate Mahsa Vahdat.

The score samples sounds from the collaborators’ daily landscapes that uplift—from birdsong to moving water recorded in front of Rive Roshan’s studio to vocals evocative of the Persian lullabies Roshan herself grew up with—voices forbidden in some places—that exemplify the beauty and power of these small acts of light.

CHIAROSCURO: A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS
by Rive Roshan

April 7 - 13
5VIE, Via Cesare Correnti 14 Milan
Hours: 10.00 am - 8 pm Daily | Extended Hours on April 9, 10:00 am - 10:00 pm
