The UK’s best new home –Caochan na Creige by @izat.arundell has been named RIBA House of the Year 2025.

A timber-framed, stone clad, self-build home in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, has been praised for its sensitivity to place and exceptional craftsmanship. Caochan na Creige – meaning β€œlittle quiet one by the rock” – takes its name from the surrounding landscape.

Clad in Lewisian Gneiss, the very material that shapes the island’s dramatic landscape, the house appears to grow out of its rugged surroundings. The design shows remarkable resilience and restraint, balancing the demands of an unforgiving climate with a deep respect for the surrounding environment.

"The choice of the winner, Caochan na Creige, was unanimous. It addressed every issue – challenging climatic conditions, the relationship to vernacular architecture and a tight budget – with a rare mixture of sensitivity and boldness." - @davidkohnarch, Chair of the RIBA House of the Year Award 2025 Jury.

Did you know our collection holds voices as well as objects?

As part of our House of Architecture programme, our team has been developing a state-of-the-art Digital Archive Management System, designed to store, preserve, and transform access to digital material within our world-class architectural collections. This has been made possible through the support of @bloombergdotorg Digital Accelerator Program.

πŸŽ™οΈ One highlight so far is a rare 1984 recording of Zaha Hadid, captured during her Architect’s Approach to Architecture talk. In it, Zaha shares early, visionary projects that would go on to define her legacy - spanning work in Hong Kong, London, and Dublin.

πŸ”— Follow the link in our bio to explore the recording and hear more voices that have redefined architecture from our #RIBACollections
