Where invisible engineering enables digital architecture (3/3): Behind the visual spectacle of the TAD Entry Portal lies precise mechanical engineering. The two pivoting LED panels function not only as a digital surface, but as full-scale architectural doors that must move reliably and smoothly within a complex technical assembly.

Each panel forms part of a structure built from aluminium extrusions, custom steel components, and integrated LED modules. Together, the doors reach a combined weight of 360 kg across a width of 3660 mm.

To support this mass and complexity, the project uses FritsJurgens System One. Fully concealed within the door construction, the pivot system provides balanced rotation and dependable performance without disrupting the architectural or digital surfaces.

This invisible technology allows the doors to open with controlled precision, transforming the illuminated wall into a kinetic threshold. What appears as a seamless media installation is made possible by carefully integrated mechanical design.

In the Best Pivot Door Contest 2026, the TAD Entry Portal was recognised for its ambitious fusion of architecture, technology, and spatial experience, demonstrating how pivot door engineering can enable entirely new architectural expressions.

Where movement becomes media (2/3): In this moment, the TAD Entry Portal transforms from architecture into experience. The pivot doors, clad in high-resolution LED panels, illuminate the threshold with bold colour and dynamic content, turning a simple passage into an immersive environment. This outstanding application secured 4th place in the Best Pivot Door Contest 2026, Speciality Applications, for the Jury Award.

Designed by Technology Architecture Design (TAD) and Model Practice, the installation merges engineering, media, and architecture into a single spatial gesture. As the doors pivot open, the digital surfaces extend the environment, creating a seamless transition between spaces. What appears to be a media installation is, at its core, a precisely engineered architectural element.

Supporting this transformation is FritsJurgens System One, discreetly integrated within the construction. Despite the doors’ combined weight of 360 kg and their complex assembly of aluminium extrusions, custom steel components, and LED panels, the system ensures balanced pivoting and controlled, effortless movement.

The technology remains invisible, allowing the digital content and architectural composition to take centre stage. It is this hidden precision that makes the immersive experience possible.

Where architecture becomes media (1/3): At the heart of Technology Architecture & Design's (TAD) New York studio, the TAD Entry Portal redefines what a pivot door can be. Designed by TAD and Model Practice, the project transforms a traditional threshold into a programmable, immersive surface, manufactured by DetaiLED®.

Two large-scale pivot panels, clad in 42 high-resolution LED modules, shift from architectural calm to dynamic digital content. The doors function as both a partition and a communication medium, seamlessly merging space, technology, and experience.

Despite their combined weight of 360 kg and dimensions of 2450 mm in height by 3660 mm in width, the doors pivot effortlessly on FritsJurgens' System One. The fully concealed hinge system ensures perfect balance, smooth movement, and reliable performance, even within a complex assembly of aluminium extrusions, custom steel components, and integrated electronics.

The jury praised the project’s ambition and its integration of architecture, technology, and experience. As Tomasz Wozny (@fosterandpartners) stated: “A bold reinterpretation of the door as a medium. The technology becomes architecture rather than ornament.”

We are excited to finally share a project we completed last year at the historic Rockefeller Apartments.

It was a rewarding experience to help the space shed layers of interventions from intermediate periods and reclaim its architectural geometry in full with thoughtful design.

Lifted Lid is a project located in the Garment District of New York City. It is the first location for Sopo, a new Korean fast casual restaurant for Everday Eats. Occupying 900 square feet on the ground floor of The Arsenal Building—completed in 1924 and designed by architect Ely Jacques Kahn—the space draws inspiration from Dosirak, a traditional Korean compartmentalized platter. A suspended box, featuring separate compartments, mirrors the layout of the space below, with each section serving a unique function. The box’s outer shell is designed to reflect the surrounding urban environment, while its interior is lined with acoustic plaster, softening the texture and reducing the noise from the bustling 7th Avenue outside.

We are pleased to share that Staging Ground, lab / office space for TAD in the Garment District of New York City is a finalist in the Tech Office category for the 2025 @nycxdesign award hosted by @interiordesignmag

With 5 distinct interventions, the project enables TAD to tailor the space to their needs and explore the boundaries of the workplace.

The Entry Portal, an immersive LED tunnel
The Grid, suspended pipe grid as infrastructural backbone
The Stage, an open floor with calibrated floor graphics
The Stage Scenery, a series of architectural-scale mobile furniture pieces
The Curtains, hung from the Grid providing physical / visual separation and acoustic attenuation
