It’s a pleasure to announce the release of our latest interview with talented contemporary dance choreographer, Cindy Yunha Jang.
From new beginnings in Aotearoa (New Zealand) and early challenges at school in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), Cindy describes finding solace in the beauty of nature with a little beach snobbery on the side. She also shares her perspective on Auckland’s creative scene, its retro vibes, endless potential, and the communities of artists there who hustle hard while always finding time to support one another.
Cindy aspires to blend K-heritage into her practice, walking us through some landmark projects such as Iron Eyes, an audience-interactive performance focused on inherited trauma of the Korean War. At present, she is developing a new choreographic work that explores the rise of K-Culture, her own sense of cultural whiplash, and its impact on her as a young Korean female.

Shared making for movement workshop 💙 with @6x4online
How can costuming for movement practice be an avenue for expanding our thinking around what it means to be a dressed body?
What is the difference between clothing and costume, and who gets to define those boundaries? Fabric can be arranged on the body in an infinite number of ways; how we can broaden our enclothed experience and how this may influence our movement?
When day-to-day clothing can be restrictive in its conventions and rules, this workshop was an invitation to explore the boundless negative space around those constraints through the form of costume.
Participants were invited to interrupt and reinterpret existing garments to explore garments not as set conventions but as purely formal, sculptural material. Through a strange twist of fate the venue where we held this workshop had no power so we ended up only using hand sewing! Restriction as a design parameter...

I was so grateful to have @janghuddle alongside me: making choreography, writing songs, and performing together. We both grew up as Korean diaspora in Aotearoa and had so many shared experiences that ultimately fall short of words or explanation. We wanted to make a work about these incommunicable, intangible parts of the human experience and the aspects that tie us to our ancestors, to each other, and to those in the future; a ritual to call out to the waters that flow wordlessly beneath us all, reminding us that we all are connected to one source.

The exhibition also featured work from @paigejansen_ @thomas___baker @shunkumagai_glass @ysdangami @johnreynoldsart. As part of the live show there was a parade of clothing by @being.clothes and @evan_beijnen with shoes by @lashoemaker_bespoke

Water flows wordlessly beneath us 2026
This collaborative project between 장윤하 Cindy Yunha Jang and 박준일 Steven Junil Park draws on their shared experiences of growing up as Korean diaspora in Aotearoa.
During a trip to Korea in 2025 they shared many conversations trying to unpack the complex histories of their cultural homeland and the place it holds in their personal experiences and identities as Tangata Tiriti in Aotearoa. In 광주 Gwangju they made a video work that took place in a river that runs underneath a market.
This symbol of water running hidden underground became a potent metaphor for the intangible parts
of the human experience: spiritual, emotional, and cultural dimensions that tie us to our ancestors and those to come in the future. The symbol is echoed in the silos, where the ocean surges underneath the reclaimed land of the viaduct. With objects and
costumes made by Steven, and choreography by Cindy, this performance acts as a ritual to call out to those waters that flow beneath us, and through us.
Steven Junil Park is a Korean-born, multi-disciplinary artist based in Ōtautahi (Christchurch). Working under the name 6x4, he creates functional objects from recycled, repurposed, and vintage materials,
often using clothing to explore questions of identity and place.
His practice is deeply process-driven, allowing materials to come alive through making and forming a language for engaging with the intangible. Park views craft as a means of understanding the human
experience, with the transformation of materials reflecting the potential for personal and inner change. He sees arts practice as a framework for togetherness where we can connect to each other, to ourselves,
and to the world around us.
On 1 May, TOMORROW he will present an installation work alongside a live performance in collaboration with Cindy Yunha Jang, expanding his exploration of material, identity, and embodied practice.

Water flows wordlessly beneath us 2026
This collaborative project between 장윤하 Cindy Yunha Jang and 박준일 Steven Junil Park draws on their shared experiences of growing up as Korean diaspora in Aotearoa.
During a trip to Korea in 2025 they shared many conversations trying to unpack the complex histories of their cultural homeland and the place it holds in their personal experiences and identities as Tangata Tiriti in Aotearoa. In 광주 Gwangju they made a video work that took place in a river that runs underneath a market.
This symbol of water running hidden underground became a potent metaphor for the intangible parts
of the human experience: spiritual, emotional, and cultural dimensions that tie us to our ancestors and those to come in the future. The symbol is echoed in the silos, where the ocean surges underneath the reclaimed land of the viaduct. With objects and
costumes made by Steven, and choreography by Cindy, this performance acts as a ritual to call out to those waters that flow beneath us, and through us.

Excited and honoured to announce that I'm one of the 16 artists to receive a Springboard award from @theartsnz this year! Along with a monetary gift I have been paired with an incredible mentor, Lisa Reihana, for a year. My award was sponsored by @hummingbirdcoffee, who started their roots in my home city of Ōtautahi.
I am so grateful to have received this award and to Lisa for agreeing to be my mentor. Beyond that I am eternally grateful to those who have supported my work and supported the arts overall. The role of an artist is not to be an individual. We seem to live in a moment when many of our emotional, social, cultural, spiritual needs are not met and the tides of loneliness, disconnection and isolation are rising. In defiance of this, I hope that our creative practices can bring us together and remind us of the things that connect us rather than divide us. I hope to be a good embodiment for these forces for connection, to be a good ancestor for those to come in the future.

How can costuming for movement practice be an avenue for expanding our thinking around what it means to be a dressed body? When day-to-day clothing can be restrictive in its conventions and rules, let us explore the boundless negative space around those constraints through the form of costume. Fabric can be arranged on the body in an infinite number of ways; through this workshop let us explore how we can broaden our enclothed experience and how this may influence our movement. This workshop is open to all but created for movement practitioners who are interested in costume.
@6x4online will share their ideas and approach to costuming, offering a practical workshop for those interested in movement to lean into abstraction and expand their thinking around clothing and costume. We will work with pre-existing clothing as a starting point to unravel, undo, deconstruct and rearrange our existing notions of the dressed body. We will lean into cloth as a compositional tool to communicate emotion, rather than the cultural conventions that we are used to reading. No sewing skills are required. Please bring any existing clothes that you are happy to donate to this workshop (they will be cut apart).
In the second part of this workshop Cindy 윤하 Yunha Jang @janghuddle will guide us through some movement explorations in the costumes we create. We will have a cool, fun photoshoot at the end!

We built homes out of sand and dirt, wishing to the toads for good fortune, wealth and loving homes for everyone. I hope the toads took up our offerings and will grant us our wishes.
Collaboration with Sunghwan was such a joy I wouldn't have had it any other way!

TOAD HOLE 🕳 🐸
This work has nothing to do with Toads and everything to do with Toads.
Moving in and out of the spell-casting shape of a 두꺼비 (toad), the body folds into makeshift homes and sites of safety, echoing the chant “두껍아 두껍아.”
Like children forming a 두꺼비 집 (toad’s house) in the sand, we are constantly searching for new ways to build our lives from what we have.
Through creating moulds and hollows from our physical selves, Cindy Yunha and Sunghwan trace the remnants left behind.
