@sofiacoppola has always been in fashion.

Three decades ago, the rebel director emerged on a New York City sidewalk: 22 years old, hoodie-clad, and filming an “outlaw” fashion show against the backdrop of her friend @themarcjacobs’s runway debut nearby. The pair clicked from the jump; Coppola, a cinema scion and girl-about-downtown in slip skirts and Stan Smiths, became a muse for the designer, who brought grunge to runways in the early ’90s.

More than 30 years, three fashion labels, eight feature films, and three marriages later, “we’re not ever really grown-up,” she says of Jacobs.

Now, Coppola is turning her lens on her friend with ‘Marc By Sofia’—her first-ever documentary and a “portrait love letter” to her old friend, charting his ascent from ponytailed Parsons School of Design prodigy to @louisvuitton creative director and beyond. In ELLE’s Women of Impact cover story, @michandrews chats with the Oscar-winning director about filming fashion’s greatest showman—and the downtown aesthetic that shaped a generation.
