Thank you so much @troysurratt @lorealparis I’m so humble♥️Tonight, we honor a man who is proof of what can happen when innate talent, relentless passion, and hard work meet fateful opportunity. There is a story he tells about how it all began. He was 14 years old an immigrant kid from Havana, Cuba, growing up in New Jersey deeply unhappy with every haircut he’d ever received. So he made a decision: he would simply figure out how to cut and style hair himself. He sat his brother down, picked up a pair of scissors, and proceeded to give him what he himself has described as “a truly terrible haircut.” After that, his father forbade him from ever touching scissors again.Thankfully, he didn’t listen. He tried again—rebelliously. He taught himself through trial and error, obsessively spending his teenage years cutting the hair of his brothers, cousins, grandmother, and friends. There was even a substitute teacher he somehow convinced to sit in his chair. There are some people who have to search for and find their calling. And then there are those for whom the calling is so loud, so undeniable, that their path appears before them—those driven by something so innate, so unrelenting, that no obstacle, no father’s prohibition, no lack of formal training could ever stand in the way. That, I think, tells you much of what you need to know about Orlando Pita.
With a natural gift for mathematics and an interest in business, he briefly explored a career in finance. But Wall Street wasn’t his fate...Then came the moment that changed everything.
He was twenty-one. His brother was assisting a fashion photographer. The hairdresser booked for a shoot canceled at the last minute, so they called Orlando. He showed up, did the job and did it well. A week later, the photographer’s agent called and said, “I think you have something special.”Six months later, after trying to build a portfolio, he found himself living in Paris, landing bookings with Peter Lindbergh and Paolo Roversi—two of the most visionary photographers of that era—before he even really knew who they were. His attitude about moving to Paris to followhis dream was simply, as he has said, “If it doesn’t
work, it doesn’t work.”
