The Masterpiece of Tamagata: Four Seasons

Four Seasons is a short sequence from the hand-painted film The Masterpiece of Tamagata (Act II, scene 10). Here, we see Tamagata's imagined world fully realised, as the child grows up against a backdrop of the passing seasons.

The production combines traditional ink painting (suiboku-ga) with computer animation and experimental AI. For more information, please visit www.figuration.co/tamagata

When I create, I disappear into another world. My surroundings cease to exist, yet my senses are heightened, connecting my physical being to an intangible realm. By combining traditional and digital media, this self portrait represents these two worlds, part of an ongoing investigation into how we express our external and internal selves in multiple realities.

Self-Portrait (Dreamer) was created for People of Tezos, a project to document artists making a contribution to the Tezos blockchain. Each artist was invited to create a digital self-portrait, which was minted with a short biography as an immutable record of their role in the community.

This animation consists of 110 portraits, each hand drawn in charcoal under a rostrum camera, then erased to make the next frame. The images were sequenced and manipulated using digital techniques developed over several years.

Last Friday's workshop at @brightonanimation (BIAF) was magical – visual storytellers with #fineart and #filmmaking backgrounds gathered to draw, discover movement and bring their work to life through animation.

Every drawing told its own story. Every #animation reflected a unique creative voice. That's what happens when you create space for #creatives and #makers to experiment together.

At the end of the session, you will have the chance to animate your drawings with a simple smartphone app.
