Sallyann and Terry took me under their wing when I tipped up in London nearly 25 years ago. In need of a bit of love and care, they became like my surrogate big brother and sister.

Proper Eastenders, out of Shoreditch and Bethnal Green, they were completely in love. They’d known each other at school but finally got together in their forties and lived each day for each other, making up for all those years apart.

A black cab driver, Terry always did things his way and defied categorisation. He was a vege, a massive music fan, an amazing storyteller (of Irish roots) and a die hard Arsenal supporter.

I’d never supported an English team before moving south but going round most Sundays for a vege roast and to watch the Gunners I grew to love the club. Alas, just after the great Invincibles.

We had season tickets together during the worst period of Arsenal’s modern history and I was in attendance at both the only time Sp*rs have won at the Emirates (two down at half time, they came back to score three in the second) and then the grim 2-1 defeat to Brum at Wembley in the league cup final.

So you can imagine how special this win is for me…

I managed to get to the Emirates last night for the final home game of the season but I never dreamed that my old town, Bournemouth, would get the job done for us tonight.

Both Tel and Sal died a few years back so they just won’t get to see the return to glory but I never set foot in the stadium (or indeed down the Roman) without missing their friendship.

Theirs was a fierce love, they really looked out for me when I was a lost boy in London. Both of them so loyal, irreverent, iconoclastic, and this season is for them.

Good Orderly Direction, Gift Of Desperation, Great Out Doors, Group Of Drunks, wherever you find your experience of the Divine, of the Sacred, is between you and your heart.

This is not my song, it’s a Gospel song that has lived with me for more than a year and has counselled me through some troubles.

I found Connection first in life through the gift of music, it took me out of me and into an experience of love beyond my fathoming. Concerts, stadia, Sunday mornings, theatres, the golden ribbon running through them all is song.

For that I am Grateful.
