🌊 @magictuberstringband return with Heavy Water (out tomorrow on @thrilljockey), their first record as a full-time trio — Courtney Werner on fiddle and field recordings, Evan Morgan on guitar and organ, joined now by Mike DeVito on bass, fiddle and banjo.
The album makes part-improvised music that sits at the centre of a triangle formed by American primitivism, Appalachian mountain music and freak folk. 🎻 It’s inspired by Werner’s work as an ecologist on the Savannah River, a site heavily contaminated by a nuclear plant built in 1952 — and the twin ideas of contamination and displacement run through everything here. The uprooting of the town of Ellenton, historical and contemporary anger, the grief felt at the loss of a home, the joy and camaraderie of protest, the quieter pull of a beloved landscape: all of it is held in the music.
Field recordings made in the locality account for much of the album’s atmosphere, from the woodpeckers drumming a defensive response to nearby machine gun fire, to the railroad clatter of “Sound of a Million Stars.” 🌲 It’s an album so thoroughly engaged with history and place that it’s sometimes hard to say where those things end and the music begins…proof that skillful, satisfying and complex compositions can carry real social and intellectual weight. ✊

Magic Tuber Stringband, hailing from North Carolina, probes the undercurrents of the landscapes around them. Highly skilled players and writers, the trio leads the burgeoning avant composition world utilizing folk instrumentation. Their music appears to weave in and out of the fabric of their surroundings, reflecting their time spent living across the Southeast and studying its regional folk traditions and natural histories. Having performed recently at Big Ears, Hopscotch, Sound & Gravity (and many other places along the way) the group’s music resonates well beyond their regional roots. Their newest record, Heavy Water, will be out May 22 on the venerable Thrill Jockey Records. The ensemble continues to stretch the parameters of acoustic instrumental expression with masterful flourishes of dense, textural arrangements, subtle minimalist gestures and deft improvisation.
