As athletes, we are always aware that the possibility of retirement is never far away. I’ve spent my 15 year career knowing that one day I would have to walk away, and yet actually saying goodbye to basketball today has been the hardest decision I’ve ever made.

做為一個職業運動員，我們一直知道「退休」就在不遠處。過去職業生涯的15年，我明確的知道有一天我會需要離去，但如今真的要跟籃球說再見，仍然是我這輩子最難的決定。

It's been the honor of a lifetime to compete against the fiercest competitors under the brightest lights and to challenge what the world thought was possible for someone who looks like me. I've lived out my wildest childhood dreams to play in front of fans all around the world. I will forever be the kid who felt fully alive everytime I touched a basketball.

能夠在最耀眼的燈光下與最猛的對手對抗，並且挑戰世俗眼光中對於我這樣體型條件所認定的可能性，是我這輩子最大的榮耀。我實現了小時候以為不可能的瘋狂夢想：在全世界的球迷們面前打球。我一直都還會是那個充滿童心，碰到籃球就覺得是最鮮活的自己。

So many people have sacrificed and poured into my journey, more than I could ever repay. Thank you all for believing in me, for walking with me, for celebrating my highs and picking me up in my lows. This is a ride I never wanted to end but I know it’s time. I will forever miss playing basketball in front of you all but our time will go beyond just playing. Here’s to what’s ahead.

這一路走來，有太多人因為我犧牲奉獻。謝謝堅信著我的你們，一路相隨陪伴，跟我一起慶祝高光時刻，但在我失落的時候也陪伴我站起來。這是一段我非常不想結束的旅程，但我知道是時候了。我永遠會懷念在你們面前打籃球的每個時刻，但我們所共同擁有的遠超于籃球。對於未來的一切，我們一起向前看。

Five years ago, I was at @taaforg’s inaugural event in DC. Five years later, it‘s amazing to reflect on how far our community has come, and still has to go.

Meet Seypong! 🫶 @seadcsf

In San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood, SEADC’s MYEEP program provides a launchpad for youth like Seypong to learn, practice, and hone their leadership capabilities. “As an intern, they would teach us life skills at their workshops everyday. It was great to have that knowledge about how to lead, but I didn’t really know how to actually use it,”Seypong said. “When I first started facilitating as a counselor, it was different from what I learned versus actually practicing it.”In just six months as a counselor, Seypong noticed a change in his confidence, public speaking, and leadership skills.

SEADC gives youth time and space to be intentional about their growth. Seypong said, “I do feel a lot of pressure from everything: family, education, academics, just trying to keep up in this society. But SEADC gave me a place where I can actually slow things down. I feel like if I keep being involved and keep working hard, I’ll be successful in the future and be able to provide and help my family.”

Meet Ashwyn! 🫶 @cacfasap

For the last 3 years, Ashwyn has been deeply involved with CACF’s Asian American Student Advocacy Project (ASAP). The program educates, trains, and equips youth leaders like Ashwyn to be self-aware and informed community leaders by enabling them to contribute to real issues and campaigns impacting their communities, and helps shape youths’ perspective on community.

Ashwyn recalled a research project he completed with CACF, around youth access to mental health services. He said, “In my schol personally, we have two social workers for the whole school: around 500 kids. And believe it or not, that’s actually a really good ratio compared to other public schools in the city. One social worker for 500 to 750 kids means that the social worker cannot create an impactful and meaningful relationship with each of the kids. They’re overworked.”

Ashwyn reflected, “By being introduced to the reality of AAPI communities, and how policy decisions that seem abstract on paper can upend someone’s daily life, I’ve realized that there’s a whole new world out there that I didn’t previously see before joining CACF. We need to think and move beyond the individual and our individual experiences to really focus on the larger systematic issues.”

Meet Yeshi! 🫶 @saya.nyc

SAYA has been a part of Yeshi’s life since he first stepped through SAYA’s gym doors as a high schooler. Fifteen years later, as a member of SAYA’s finance team, he now finds time to impact students in his own way. “I don’t want youth to feel like I’m a teacher,” Yeshi said. “The same way that I never held back from sharing with [my mentor] Suhail, these kids don’t hold back either. When they want advice, I give it to them how I would want it—but of course with grace and with love.”

Yeshi also shared about his friends during his time participating at SAYA. “In the safe space that SAYA created, my friends and I began opening up about insecurities and mental health struggles that none of us had ever shared. Hearing those stories revealed sides of each other we never expected — unfiltered, authentic, and genuinely ourselves. It definitely made us closer, for sure.”

「我發現原來生活艱辛的人，也能通過努力去做好自己想要的事情！」

這是一個 10 歲男孩聽完我的分享後寫下的心得。我有點意外，因為通常大家不會用「生活艱辛」來形容我的籃球歷程；這讓我發現，這個小男孩或許對「生活艱辛」有深刻的感受，才會在我的故事裡找到共鳴。

小男孩來自農村，爸媽為了生計到了上海、從事工時長的勞力工作，於是他跟著爸媽一起來到超大都市生活，但面對環境、節奏、文化的巨大變化，身邊沒有朋友，爸媽又必須日夜奔波在外，讓孩子在課業與情感上都難以獲得足夠的支持。所以我特別希望能關注這群人數很多卻處於弱勢的「流動兒童」，為他們盡我的力量。

今年二月，我拜訪了「上海太陽花社區兒童服務中心」，這裡為流動兒童提供公益課輔班與才藝課程。那天，我看見孩子們開心地表演音樂，也看見他們一個個展現自信的笑容。現在的我也更懂得，能有一個讓父母放心託付、給予孩子支持的空間是多麼珍貴。20 多年來，這個機構的負責人始終站在第一線、為弱勢孩童撐起這片穩定成長的空間，也讓我非常感動。

我已經從籃球場上退休，但協助弱勢兒童的權益與教育，仍然是我持續關注的方向。透過我的『三分心公益』計畫，我會持續關注他們的需要，並繼續為下一代投入心力。

“I realized that even people in difficult circumstances can still work hard and achieve what they want.”

This was written by a 10 year old boy after listening to my sharing. It caught me off guard because most people would not describe my life journey as “difficult”. It made me realize that he may have experienced real hardship himself and that is why he was able to connect with my story.

He comes from a rural area. His parents moved to Shanghai for work, taking on long hours of labor intensive jobs. He followed them into a huge city and had to adjust to a completely new environment, pace, and culture. Without friends around and with his parents working day and night, he has had limited support both in school and emotionally. This is why I feel called to pay attention to this group of migrant children and do what I can to support them.

In February, I visited the Sunflower Community Center for Migrant Children in Shanghai. They provide free tutoring and enrichment programs for migrant children. That day I saw kids performing music with joy and more importantly I saw confidence in their smiles. It reminded me how meaningful it is to have a safe space where children are supported and parents can feel at ease. For more than 20 years, the people behind this organization have stayed committed on the front lines, creating a stable environment for these kids to grow. That moved me deeply.

Even though I have retired from basketball, supporting underprivileged children and their education will always be part of my life’s mission. Through my “Threes for Hope” initiative, I will continue focusing on their needs and investing in the next generation.

“I realized that even people in difficult circumstances can still work hard and achieve what they want.”

This was written by a 10 year old boy after listening to my sharing. It caught me off guard because most people would not describe my life journey as “difficult”. It made me realize that he may have experienced real hardship himself and that is why he was able to connect with my story.

He comes from a rural area. His parents moved to Shanghai for work, taking on long hours of labor intensive jobs. He followed them into a huge city and had to adjust to a completely new environment, pace, and culture. Without friends around and with his parents working day and night, he has had limited support both in school and emotionally. This is why I feel called to pay attention to this group of migrant children and do what I can to support them.

In February, I visited the Sunflower Community Center for Migrant Children in Shanghai. They provide free tutoring and enrichment programs for migrant children. That day I saw kids performing music with joy and more importantly I saw confidence in their smiles. It reminded me how meaningful it is to have a safe space where children are supported and parents can feel at ease. For more than 20 years, the people behind this organization have stayed committed on the front lines, creating a stable environment for these kids to grow. That moved me deeply.

Even though I have retired from basketball, supporting underprivileged children and their education will always be part of my life’s mission. Through my “Threes for Hope” initiative, I will continue focusing on their needs and investing in the next generation.
