“Hello Stranger, Let’s have lunch!” That’s how our Canberra Salon conversationalists Sonia van de Haar and Sally Farrah @s_farrah_ first met. Sonia, creative director of Lymesmith @lymesmithy , hosts a monthly, informal “lunch with strangers” in Canberra, which brings together interesting creative people. Sally, a lecturer from the University of Canberra @architecture_uc was on the guest list. What a fabulous idea!
Sally and Sonia reunited for the recent Canberra Autumn Salon, sharing a rich discussion on colour, pondering why it is so often neglected in architecture and what is lost as a result. Sonia realised very early that “architecture has a colour problem”, with the early 2000s dominated by monochrome-heavy design culture. Sally agreed that colour remains under-theorised and undervalued in architecture education and practice, despite profoundly shaping how people feel, behave and connect to spaces.
Topics included colour design as a place-based practice, the use of colour in trauma-informed design, and its power to calm and soften, and offer beauty and delight. Colour was explored as a powerful language carrying conscious and unconscious meanings. The conversation moved to the use of tools and the hand/eye/mind connection, the work of Kenneth Frampton and ideas of Critical Regionalism, and the commodification of architecture. The discussion was jampacked with thought-provoking reflections, ideas and calls for more colour!
The discussion will be available as a future Parlour POD episode.
