Looking to cool off? 🌊☀️
With warm temperatures continuing, it’s important to stay safe around water.
Open water such as rivers and lakes can contain hidden hazards, including debris, unpredictable currents, and sudden changes in depth. Even on the hottest days, the water can remain surprisingly cold.
For a safer way to enjoy the water, why not visit one of the county’s organised venues? From public swimming pools and splash parks to watersports centres, there are plenty of great options to help you stay cool.

Even on the warmest days, our rivers and lakes stay surprisingly cold. That shock can hit your body hard — making it suddenly difficult to swim or even breathe properly.

If you’re getting into the water, don’t jump in. Take it slow, give your body time to adjust, and stay in control.
And if you ever accidentally fall in:
➡️ Fight the urge to panic
➡️ Tilt your head back
➡️ Spread your arms and legs
➡️ Float… breathe… and regain control

Be Water Aware.

Heading to the coast this weekend or over half term? Stay safe in the water.
You don’t have to be swimming or surfing to get into trouble — hidden hazards can catch anyone out. If you find yourself struggling in the water, remember: Float to Live.

Our Cadets wanted to share how to stay safe around our waterways. With temperatures expected to soar this weekend, more people may visit water areas. Remember: Be Water Aware: If you find someone in trouble, Phone 999 and ask for the fire service, tell them to Float on their back and Throw them something that floats. Use what3words to give your exact location. Find out more at: https://orlo.uk/xiXh1

Hertfordshire’s first-ever Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Partnership Strategy has been launched this week.
The partnership is led by survivor voices throughout the design, delivery and monitoring of its services and interventions.
A VAWG Communications Charter was also launched at the event, again developed in collaboration with survivors. The charter sets out how stories or incidents relating to VAWG can be better communicated.

Water can be unpredictable. Always keep a close eye on children near water, even for a moment. Cold water shock can affect anyone’s ability to swim — and it can happen in summer as well as winter.

Be Water Aware. Stay safe.

⚠️ A resident has reported receiving an email claiming they will have a home visit to check smoke alarms, with a £500 charge for homes without a working alarm.
This is a scam and we would never charge to carry out a home fire safety visit.

Be Water Aware: If you find someone in trouble, Phone 999 for help, tell them to Float on their back and Throw them something that floats.

Phone 999 for help if someone is in trouble in the water. Never enter the water to attempt a rescue.
Tell them to Float on their back.
Throw them something that floats. This can be lifesaving equipment, such as a throwline, but anything that floats can help save a life.

Out in Meru County, Kenya this month, our prevention officer Zoe Crossan joined colleagues from @bucksfirerescue, @scas_999 and @eastenglandamb to support vital water safety work as part of the NFCC's Be Water Aware Campaign.

Working alongside Kenyan firefighters and the Kenyan Red Cross, Zoe helped deliver 'Phone, Float, Throw' rescue training and practical prevention guidance to help their communities stay safe around water. Our Kenyan firefighter friends have a message for us all in the UK in case you find yourself in trouble in the water.
